Books »Foxfire

by Joyce Carol Oates (1993)

Teenage girls are infinitely fascinating and mysterious to me (even though I was one once!). There’s such a deep emotional well and dynamic opposing elements, it’s little wonder that their world can make for excellent fiction when handled right (see Virgin Suicides and My Summer of Love).

Joyce Carol Oates makes the rebellion of teenage girls, and the intense friendships that can be formed, especially with little or no family influence, the topic of Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang. Told through the older, though perhaps no wiser eyes of one of the gang members years later, the story is mostly set in the early 1950’s in the run down town of Hammond, NY.

“Legs” Sadovsky is the gang leader, a bold, complex young hellion, beyond her years and an idol for admiration to lost girls. Under her watch and direction, a rag tag group of outsiders, all young girls and denouncing men, form Foxfire, a girl gang that goes beyond mere tattoos and matching outfits but delves into violence, recklessness, theft and eventually worse in an uncontrolled vent against a world with few options and many obstacles.

It’s a fast paced and quick read that I have on good authority is a million times better than the loose film adaptation which seems to take all the bite out of the plot and sets the story in the early 90’s with Angelina Jolie. It’s a shame, because in the right hands it could make a compelling movie. For now, read the book instead.

Laughs »What Phish Sounds Like To People That Hate Phish

Possibly The Shortest Phish Song Ever

Maybe this will help Jim to understand why forcing guests to listen to the “best” Phish album at my birthday party is not only totally uncool but downright cruel.

Recipes »Rootbeer Float Cupcakes

From Mike

Readers of my blog are probably familiar with my friend Mike and his culinary ingenuity (he’s made home made White Castles, churros donuts, a Momofuku menu, and Oktoberfest pretzels in the past) but at work, he’s somehow never won a prestigious bake off… until now! This creative Root Beer Float cupcake comes from a modified Food Network recipe below. I was lucky enough to try one before they went to the office and fond it much like a nice gingerbread cake with home made frosting, yum!

Ingredients

Root Beer Cake:

1 cup butter
1 2/4 cups granulated sugar
1/4 molasses
3 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon ground sassafras root
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 1/2 teaspoons root beer (I used Virgil’s or Manhattan Special’s Sarsaparilla, skip the fake sugar low grade sodas)
4 eggs
1 tablespoon root beer extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup milk
Vanilla Cream Frosting:

3 3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 1/4 cups butter
2 1/2 tablespoons heavy cream
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two cupcake trays (this makes about 24 cupcakes).  I flour the bottoms with cocoa powder since this is a brown cake, so not only does it not show the white flour spots, but it also adds a toasted chocolate taste).

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter; then add the sugar and molasses, and continue mixing until light and fluffy.

Meanwhile, sift together together the cake flour, baking powder, salt, sassafras root and cloves.

With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the eggs one at a time, and then the bottled root beer to the butter mixture until blended. Mix in the root beer and vanilla extracts. Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to form a smooth batter.

Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake until just set, about 15 to 18 minutes. Let cool in pans for 5 minutes, and then invert onto cooling racks to cool completely before frosting.

In a standing mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the confectioners’ sugar and butter. Mix on low speed until well blended; then increase speed to medium and beat for another 3 minutes. Add the cream and vanilla and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed to reach spreading consistency.

Place the frosting into a pastry bag or a ziplock bag with a corner cut off.  Then pipe the icing like a soft serve ice cream on top of each of the cup cakes.  I then chilled the cupcakes for 30 minutes to let the icing set and finished them off with a 1/3 of a cut drinking straw and a 1/2 of a mini pretzel rod on top of each.

Style Icons: Female »Joan Collins

Fabulously Bitchy

Joan Collins has probably been spouting her mouth off about all sorts of people and things for years, just recently Hello Magazine has decided to take notice and her quotes about Jennifer Aniston (saying she’s cute but not beautiful — which is totally true by the way) are making headlines. I am just glad to see the excessively glamorous star is still a catty bitch.

Most well known for her portrayal as Alexis Colby on Dynasty, Collins was also quite a foxy young thing before that career making role. I am surprised she never made it out of campy B-movies in her early career, but, I am sure she doesn’t regret a thing. She’s managed to live fabulously in a very champagne and caviar dreams way.

TV Shows »Gia

Too Beautiful to Die, Too Wild to Live

When you’re playing the waiting game while pregnant, you’ve got to find things on a daily basis to get excited about. For me, the fact that Lifetime Movies Network was playing Gia, and that I had it taped was one exciting, alone time afternoon taken care of. The Angelina Jolie vehicle is the pinnacle of made for TV true stories and everyone is turned up to 11 with campy performances.

Faye Dunaway is channeling her most eye brow arching faux accent. Jolie is constantly growling and writhing. Mercedes Ruehl is spectacularly theatrical as the ignorant flawed mother. Even Juliet, that smirky doctor on Lost, is here, as a reluctant lover. Sprinkled throughout are token bitchy fashion gays, flamboyant photographers and even an embarrassing Anna Wintour type who declares stuff like “Now this is meat! This is sirloin!”

While the true story of Gia is quite tragic, she was one of the first casualties of AIDS, in HBO’s hands the lesson to not take drugs makes for entertaining TV. It’s definitely the most watchable thing Angelina’s been in. Campy gems like this only come along every once in a while.

Spend a Couple Hours »Team Clean

Green, Non-Toxic, Holistic Cleaning Services

I’m not one for paying people to do things for me – even a manicure can sometimes make me uneasy (I’m getting over it), so even though I probably need some help in the cleaning department more than most, I’ve never looked into cleaning services. Lucky for me, the stars aligned – Jim and I were asked to design a website for the new All Natural and Biodegradable cleaning service, Team Clean in exchange for a few sessions. This was a god send at nine months pregnant.

Run by Candace Mills, who ran a successful Memphis cleaning service called 2 Chicks and A Broom along with college friend Megan Pflug and J Penry, Team Clean is a great, environmentally sound company that is pet friendly and super speedy.

Two people, including Candice came over for an initial 2 hour session and were like cleaning machines. From the floor to the stove, everything smelt clean and fresh and even all the cat hair (the amount of which you can’t even begin to imagine) was gone. They require a two hour minimum per session and can meet with you to assess price and cleaning style. I highly recommend contacting them!

Songs »Superstar

by Sonic Youth (1994)

If the real deal Carpenters version of Superstar doesn’t sit well with you, maybe you’re of a hipper ilk and prefer somewhat ironic covers instead. Well, despite tons of iffy attempts by lesser artists, only a band as effortlessly cool as Sonic Youth can really pull of a modern take of one of 1970’s cheesiest (in a good way) ballads. Thurston Moore sounds drugged out and heart broken in a much drowsier and noisier take than The Carpenters (little wonder Richard does not care for it). It’s even more of a departure from the jazzy first incarnations by original artists Delaney and Bonnie and Rita Coolidge.

Aside from being one of my favorite Carpenters songs, I am partial to the hit due to its large part in the very funny Cintra Wilson book, Colors Insulting to Nature.

Albums »Carpenters

by The Carpenters (1971)

The Carpenters self titled album is an iconic one of its time, and many will argue, of the worst of its time. Schmaltzy, cheesy, feathery soft and mild, Karen and brother Richard were the number one selling act in the 1970’s (this album alone went quadruple platinum). Still, it’s soothing music like this that sometimes hits the mid afternoon spot and can anyone deny that she possessed one of the nicest voices ever recorded?

You’ll likely be familiar with most of the album’s many hits (Rainy Days and Mondays, For All We Know, Superstar) but there are less often played songs here too. Drusilla Penny, a rare Carpenters ditty sung by Richard, is Jim’s favorite (though he is not a big fan over all) but some of the others are admittedly a bit much to handle even for me as I recommend you give this adult contemporary dynamo a chance (see Bacharach medley and Saturday).

Web Sites »Virgin Galactic

Book Your Place in Space

While I am sure it might get some people’s blood boiling that the coolest stuff life has to offer is only available to the super wealthy, I have to say the website for the promise of commercial space travel, Virgin Galactic has me a bit excited. Not only because the idea of space travel is a fun one that sadly people haven’t really been as enthusiastic for the past decade or so, but also because it looks like a fake website made for a B+ sci fi movie that might star a new Casper Van Diem type.

The cost for a trip to outer space is $200,000 and while there’s no exact date on when these super rich white guys will be able to safely blast off, the project recently got one step closer with a manned free flight to over 45,000 feet on 10/10/10.

Restaurants »Ocean Jewels Seafood

13330 39th Ave. Flushing

While the name of our latest dim sum destination is confusing – is it Ocean Jewel Seafood, as written about everywhere online? Or Asian Jewels as the punch card menu would suggest? Well, either way, you’ll have no trouble finding it as the building is a humungeous banquet hall type with its own valet parking lot (actually incredibly helpful in the hard to park neighborhood) situauted next to the large KO Karaoke Club and across from the Flushing Mall.

We went with dim sum lovers who were new to the more traditional point at cart ordering system which always adds a bit of drama to dining. Even if you can get an answer to “what is that” it can be misleading (vegetarian dumplings hide lots of meat – so not the best place for the picky or the vegetarian). We only struck out on one dish – a sausage in a bun that looked like an uncooked, puffy pig in a blanket but according to Mike and Jim was “interesting… like a fat Slim Jim”. I decided to pass.

The best things we tried were the fluffy pork buns and the “super” dish of black bean clams whose sauce was to die for. I also went a little crazy on the chive dumplings, a favorite of mine and my first thought of the day when I woke up (must have chive dumpling!) so I went ahead and have about four. Steamed shrimp dumplings are always great and we tried a new dessert that looked like a lobster tail made of fried dough. It was flaking and sticky and quite good on the cart woman’s recommendation (I’ve learned from past experiences to try something if the lady is enthusiastic enough about it). We finished the incredibly cheap feast (less than 20 per person for lots and lots of food) with some soft sesame seed balls.

While on a few staples, I think I prefer the other two dim sum places we’ve been (particularly the shumai and dumplings) the pork buns and bean clams more than make Ocean Jewel (or is it Asian Jewels?) a worthwhile dim sum excurtion. Just be prepared for a long wait with restless eaters if you come past 11 am.
