Web Sites »The Girl Who Ate Everything

A Blog About Food

If you’ve ever looked up a restaurant on flickr, chances are that one of the mouth watering images you’ve seen will have come from roboppy – aka Robin, the blogger behind the food blog The Girl Who Ate Everything. There are over 1600 pages in her flickr photostream (!) so believe me when I say that the few images I’ve included only scratch the surface of her bright and appetizing photos… just be sure not to go through them on an empty stomach.

The blog itself is charming and not limited to the city. Her travels will surely offer good ideas for where to eat abroad and elsewhere in the US. My only complaint is that it’s a little difficult to browse the extensive archives.

She also writes for one of my favorite blogs, Serious Eats and recently became a fan of exotic short hairs (Tiptoe loves having fans). What a gal!

Spend a Couple Minutes »Wear Purple

Spirit Day

Wear purple today to support Spirit Day – in honor of those LGBT teens who have lost their lives in a struggle against bigotry and those that continue to fight it. From the GLAAD website:

The idea behind Spirit Day, first created by teenager Brittany McMillan earlier this month, is a simple one, not dissimilar to the idea of “Spirit Week” held in many high schools, and can be summed up in three words: Everyone Rally Together.

Spirit Day honors the teenagers who had taken their own lives in recent weeks. But just as importantly, it’s also a way to show the hundreds of thousands of LGBT youth who face the same pressures and bullying, that there is a vast community of people who support them.

Purple symbolizes ‘spirit’ on the rainbow flag, a symbol for LGBT Pride that was created by Gilbert Baker in 1978.

As one of the event’s Facebook pages says: “This event is not a seminar nor is it a rally. There is NO meeting place. All you have to do is wear purple.”

Wearing purple on October 20 is a simple way to show the world that you stand by these courageous young people and a simple way to stand UP to the bullies. Remember those lives we’ve tragically lost, and show your solidarity with those who are still fighting. ‘Go Purple’ today!

Below/after the jump are some sartorial purple inspirations.

TV Shows »New York 2010 Gubernatorial Debate

A Circus

Last night’s circus of a Gubernatorial debate was entertaining, if not sparking all the fireworks I was hoping for. Seven candidates, each getting a few minutes to answer questions (or more often, go off on tangents unrelated to the questions) equals a totally uninformative couple of hours but it was no waste of time if you love crazy people. First of all, I’d like to know how they managed to make it look like archival footage from 1983, particularly the opening shots of host Doug Geed – maybe it was a subtle nod to the days of Cuomo’s papa? Anyways…

Coumo was fine. He will win and I think/hope he’ll do a decent job in a very tough political and financial environment. Paladino was barely present. Obviously without poncing on the urge to get rage-y the man is a doddering nothing. He even got up during people’s final words to take a piss!!! It was frankly disappointing. I assumed he’d have some choice words and unplanned moments of insanity, but instead he just seemed like some irritated old guy (who still doesn’t like gays).

The crazy came from The Rent Is Too Damn High candidate Jimmy McMillan who sports dashingly pro-wrestler style facial hair (I do not mean that as an insult) and a pair of gloves. Not just any gloves, but the kind of gloves murderers wear in Italian horror movies and Murder She Wrote. Among his memorable quotes were “You want to marry a shoe, I’ll marry you” and “I am the governor. I want full control.” At one point he also mentioned a pinky and the brain type plan to mow down mountains upstate to set up his own cable network and power plant.

Kristin Davis read her Roger Stone zingers from a notebook like a junior high girl giving a book report, but, I’ll admit they were pretty funny. Howie actually had some progressive ideas that were more interesting than most people’s dry rhetoric. Unfortunately, he’s never going to win and he expressed these ideas without convincing anyone even with his Steel Magnolias accent. Barron was eloquent enough but usually off topic and Warren Redlich was initially actually cringe inducing. His whining “I’m no politician” speeches called to mind Albert Brooks if he weren’t funny. To his credit, he got a little better as the evening went on.

A one on one debate between Paladino and Coumo would have in many ways been more interesting and helpful to voters  – though I see neither one accepting NY1’s invitation – Cuomo because he’s a lock for the position (proven in this debate) and Paladino because he probably realized how badly he’d be beaten.

Of course all of this is leading up to November 2 – a big voting day that I hope all of you make sure to participate in!

Songs »I Can’t Give You Anything But Love

by Fats Waller and Una Mae Carlisle (1939)

The jazzy standard, I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, Baby gained popularity in Blackbirds of 1928, a popular music review. It’s the Fats Waller (who is debated to be the true original author of the song) and Una Mae Carlisle version that I love to listen to. Waller reportedly hated music that was too sentimental and would goof around in recordings so that he wasn’t asked to do them anymore. He’s plenty goofy and endearing in this one.

Recipes »Lamb Burgers with Cilantro and Chevre

from “Cold-Weather Cooking” by Sarah Leah Chase

There’s something special about this Lamb Burger with Chevre and Cilantro. It stays moist even when cooked past medium and packs a whole lot of flavor. Top with the usual condiments and even add some harissa for a kick. While the recipe calls for grilling, pan frying works just as well.

Movies »King of Comedy

directed by Martin Scorsese (1983)

The King of Comedy is a masterpiece about desperation and fame. Scorsese may be better known for crime dramas and prefer sweeping epics but when he focuses  on smaller stories and comedy, he has made some of my favorite movies, including this one (along with After Hours and Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore). Robert DeNiro, who at this point is usually portraying a caricature of himself either as tough guy or reluctant comedian is brilliant here in a role that could have easily tipping into ridiculousness but retains some real pathetic pathos and the strange creepiness of a real delusional weirdo.

His character, Rupert Pupkin is no Travis Bickle, but he’s no less messed up. He dreams of comedy stardom, specifically stardom reached on the arm of Jerry Langford, a late night talk show host played with incredible jaded subtely by the usually goofy Jerry Lewis. He finds a friend, a rival, and eventually a partner in crime in a wealthy loon Masha played by the amazing Sandra Bernhard. After this off kilter, insane and lusty performance, I forever love her and wonder why her particular brand of on screen craziness isn”t used more often in movies.

It’s a movie I love to revisit and invites repeat viewings. It’s always exciting to be able to recommend it to people who’ve never seen it, and there are many since this box office bomb is often over looked and forgotten in the careers of DeNiro and Scorsese – who says this is his favorite of all their collaborations.

Style Icons: Male »David Downton

Fashion Illustrator

If you’re a fashion lover, the sketches of David Downton are likely familiar even if you don’t know the name. One of the most inspiring and visible fashion illustrators working today, Downton is going to become more well known with his new lovely looking book, Masters of Fashion Illustration (which features many other illustrators as well).

A hard working freelance graphic artist for years, who according to his biography was “wagging (his) tail when the phone rang”, he eventually found a niche in the fashion world that has resulted in some of the most beautiful modern portraits of the world’s most beautiful women.

Spend a Couple Hours »Frame Your Photos

No More Bare Walls

If you’re like me you have at least one bin filled with photos and an even larger digital library. As one last big chore while awaiting baby we decided to finally frame a few. There’s no need to go to a framer (though I can recommend a good one in Greenpoint). With just a little bit of creativity we managed to get several up on our walls on the cheap.

We started with Ikea, home to cheap everything and picked up a cart full of frames. Right now they are carrying some really fun brightly colored ones as well as deep set neutrals and woods. Unfortunately many, the brights included, aren’t quite to American sizes, so we had to improvise. We found some equally fun colored art paper at Artists and Craftsman Supply in Brooklyn, which we used as a faux matte.

We just cut out a square of colored paper to the size of the frame window, using the back as a template and centered the photo before reassembling. Getting photos centered took a little practice but is quite easy. The result is pretty great and adds a nice shock off color to our walls. We started with some of our favorite actual photographs, but didn’t want to ignore some digital favorites.

Canon Pixma Photo Paper Pro Platinum delivered the best results for printing. I have a new Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II for work that did an incredible job with the prints. Printing our own photos also allowed us to re-size images to fit the awkward frames without faux matting.

Laughs »The 15 Best Quotes From Justin Bieber’s Autobiography

Pizza, Pranks, Chuck Norris!

I know this brilliantly presented collection of quotes on Buzzfeed is supposed to make you glad you didn’t have to read the autobiography Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story, but it just endears me to him (for the first time – I wasn’t even swayed by his CSI appearance and I’ve never heard a song of his that wasn’t slowed down 800%). I mean he LOVES pizza, pranks, and Chuck Norris sooooo much!! It reminds me of another great personal story, Ice by Ice: The Vanilla Ice Story in His Own Words (now I am wondering where my copy of that went to). Honestly, I just added it to my amazon wish list.

Places to Visit »Hollywood Wax Museum

6767 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA

No one really goes to the Hollywood Wax Museum. But Jim and I are suckers for this kind of thing and the grimier the better. There are plenty of opportunities to ham it up with all your favorite celebrities like a frightening Jim Carrey, the Crypt Keeper, and a demented Will Farrell. The wax sculptors are not always generous to the famous people they’re creating – if I were Gwyneth or Toby Maguire I’d develop some serious issues after one visit (the former with the idea of inhuman all-body cellulite, the later with a completely dimwitted expression). If I remember correctly, it’s a bit expensive (as to be expected from a tourist trap) but so worth it to show our child photos of us hanging out with Austin Powers and Samuel L Jackson – he’ll think we are sooo cool.

There are lots, maybe too many, photos below/after the jump including an up shell shot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
