Places to Visit »Mummer’s Museum

1100 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA

The Mummers Parade is an age-old institution that is alive (if not exactly well) in Philadelphia; posters on the walls of the South Philly Mummer’s Museum dedicated to the traditional New Year’s Day event scream “Save the Mummers Museum!” and the unkempt, slightly decaying exhibits give the place a quality not unlike Mrs. Havisham’s home…

Unusually quiet, with only a few volunteers and one other couple present, the museum is as eerie as it is fascinating. As the social clubs that were the backbone of Mummers’ communities fade away, and the museum itself become more run down, spending the afternoon among so many dusty memories is a wonderful way to pass a couple of hours.

The first display of Terminator-meets-He-Man-like costumes are winners of a recent parade and videos show the costumes in action during the annual celebration. The intricacy of the ritual and the costumes themselves make me want to attend the next year’s event and the crumbling but stunning museum (which calls to mind the images of Kubrick) do indeed make me want to help save the Mummers.

So why don’t you all start by visiting? Admission is only $3.50 and more than worth it!

TV Shows »Human Remains

aired in 2000

I’d be excited about anything Rob Brydon and Julia Davis were a part of, so Human Remains, wherein they play six different married couples, was at the top of my list of BBC shows to seek out while at Amoeba in LA (sadly, they didn’t have it, so i broke down and got it from Amazon UK). It’s a treat, but a very strange treat that you may not want to share with everyone – kind of like salted licorice or such.

It’s funny… but not exactly funny. Like so many British comedies, it’s as dark and sad as it is humorous – though no where near as pitch black dark as Davis went on to do in Brix Pick, Nighty Night. From aristocratic twits to swinging goofballs, from paranoid Christians to wacky musicians, all of their character portraits are well developed and intriguing even as they mostly deal with depression, betrayal, and death.

Movies »La belle et la bête

directed by Jean Cocteau (1946)

Jean Cocteau‘s masterful La Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast) is a highly influential and romantically fantastic visual feast. Coppola drew inspiration for his schlocky but fun Dracula and I personally was highly inspired when I made my very first film project in college (which, sadly, I no longer have a copy of).

Taking the classic fairy tale and adding the intrigue of a villainous suitor (a story update which was taken on in the Disney animation), the film is still a fairly faithful adaptation that has remained a beloved gem (Stevie Nicks is a huge fan) for decades. The costumes, which drip with jewels and drape dreamily are exquisite and the sets are surreal and dreamlike.

Fans of film making should put this to the top of their lists if they’ve never seen it. See a gallery below/after the jump.

Books »What to Expect When You’re Expecting

by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel

Yes, it’s true: Jim and I have a little one on the way!! Safely past my first trimester, we are excited to find out if it’s a boy or a girl in the next couple months. The classic What to Expect When You’re Expecting was our first purchase when we discovered we were pregnant. It answers so many of the questions mommies-to-be have, plus some you (or at least I) had never thought of.

Of course, all that information can also get one worried, so I put the book back on the shelf for weeks at a time. The new edition cover features a strange Photoshop-illustrated, photograph hybrid woman, but don’t be concerned, the information inside is still the same as it’s always been (with modern updates of course).

Songs »Sweet Lady

by Tyrese (1998)

Sweet Lady, won’t you be my sweet love for a life time? I have no idea why I know this song so well, but when it popped up on the radio while I was dining the other night, I was instantly singing along.

I’m more familiar with Tyrese from his modeling, VJ-ing talents, but if this late nineties single is any indication, he should quit his day job.

Hunks »Edward Woodward and Patrick Mower

Callan’s Men

This week’s TV pick, Callan is packed with British manliness and Edward Woodward and Patrick Mower are among the most dashing examples. Woodward might be more familiar to you from the show The Equalizer which, I have to admit, I’ve never actually seen.

Mower is less well known having made a career in Britain as television spies or detectives with his squished in nose (a feature that always drives me wild – see Noel Fielding or Joaquin Phoenix).

Style Icons: Female »Jadin Wong

Famed Dancer

When Jadin Wong passed away at 96 recently, it was proclaimed “the end of an era”. I was introduced to the brassy, ballsy, eccentric and spectacular woman in a clip from a Budd Mishkin interview where, at 90, she was still dancing and told the world that she “kicked tush”. From nightclubs to Broadway to comedy to film, her career was varied and pioneering.

Restaurants »The Smoke Joint

87 South Elliott Place

Airy, friendly and nestled in a cute triangle in Fort Greene, The Smoke Joint is an appealing spot to enjoy smoked meats and that’s exactly what I was craving last weekend when we stumbled upon the place. We shared the plate of pulled pork and a half rack of baby back ribs. Both were tasty, the ribs perhaps winning out for flavor, but extra kick, flavor and moistness can be added with the sweet or spicy sauces that come to the table. The sides: a creamy, bring-to-a-picnic-worthy potato salad and a cakey, sweet cornbread were perfect companions as well as the refreshing “Tiger Woods” – an Arnold Palmer for a new generation.

In that area near BAM, where it might be hard to find a spot before or after a show, I highly recommend Smoke Joint. Adjacent there is also the Pig Bar, a bourbon lover’s paradise that I’d like to visit once I can throw one back again. Ben Grossman and Craig Samuel serve what they call “real New York barbecue” so BBQ snobs can’t make too many crying comparisons. I’m not sure where they land for me in the grand scheme of local BBQ because I don’t always order the same thing, but my guess is someplace in the high middle.

Drinks »Soda Stream

Make Your Own Seltzer

Genius!! It seemed like all my friends had some sort seltzer maker that I would gaze at with envy and now I’m keeping up with the Joneses and with my very own Soda Stream. It’s easy to use, if a bit loud, and makes fizzy perfect seltzer every time.

I am in love with a product that may very well be the fondue fad of our time.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Zac Posen for Target

April 24

Another month, another Target designer collaboration and, despite the fact that I am not a particular fan of Zac Posen‘s main line, I’m surprised to say that this is one of the best Target designer lines yet. I failed the stamina check to stand in line for the late night 24 sale for the pop-up shop, but intend to do my vigil and get up in the earliest hours and go crazy online.

From gold lame, to tuxedo tanks, from ruffled skirts to funky prints there’s just so much to covet! Maybe Posen, who faces major financial issues, should design more affordable all the time and rake it in.

See some shots below/after the jump and more at Fashionista.
