Style Icons: Female »Cindy Crawford

Iconic Supermodel

I don’t know why, but I was really hoping when the September issue of Vogue was revealed it would feature someone like Cindy Crawford, looking all golden age supermodel. While Lady Gaga is a considerably better choice than Sienna Miller, I’m not thrilled with pop icons taking over all the important covers.

Oh well, better things to worry about, right?

But it did get me thinking of what a phenomena Crawford was back in the day. The Mole, the Pepsi ad, the House of Style (love!!), the Billy Baldwin movie.. And eventually the sectional collection available at Raymore and Flannigan.

She was sexy, everyone’s fantasy, yet still somehow relatable. She never seemed like some lofty , snooty supermodel despite being the most iconic one of her time – which frankly made her not my very favorite top model because I like lofty and snooty.

Style Icons: Male »Dick Clark

“America’s Oldest Teenager”

So long Dick Clark. His influential American Bandstand introduced America to rock and roll. Here are a few favorite moments to watch in his honor: Cyndi Lauper, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Doors, DEVO, Buddy Holly, Berlin, Blondie, and The Big Bopper.

The passing of such a nice man (and the 20,000 Dollar Pyramid host -let’s not forget!) is very sad news. Almost as sad is the fact that New Years will, going forward, be associated with Ryan Seacrest instead.

NY1

If I ever leave New York, NY1 will be one of the things I miss the most. Because of images like this one.

Laughs »How Spencer Pratt Crashes a Party

Craziness

I love this. The Kenny Rogers get up made me laugh out loud… does this mean I am becoming a Spencer Pratt fan?

Hunks »Nicholas Confessore

Times Reporter

Ok I’ll admit that there’s something distinctly Patrick Bateman, or at least Jay McInerney/Bret Easton Ellis privileged evil about the looks of Times reporter Nicholas Confessore and I’ll admit it’s probably unfair to judge a book by his cover, but here we are.

Besides, I find Cofessore’s insights somewhat, well, insightful when he one ups the other reporters during the reporter round up on our favorite early evening local show Inside City Hall (which is better than ever with the dismissal of shockingly terrible Dominick Carter because of the lovely and tough (Jim crush) Elizabeth Kaledin). Well, he one ups style wise at least – imagine Jordan Catalano in a designer suit with a quirky (but expensive) tie plopped down among men and women that look like, well, normal hard working, no sleep, lots of cigarette Albany reporters. His baby blues stand out a mile away in the crowd and no doubt the pretty boy looks have gained him as many haters as admirers.

Gawker calls him a party-ho, but of course can’t help but take a photo of him at every single party he attends – usually with equally cute long time girlfriend Noelle Hancock on his arm. She’s also a reporter of sorts. Though while he was part of the crack team that took down Eliot Spitzer, she helped launch Us Weekly’s entertainment blog (laugh if you want – but I bet I know whose articles you’d secretly read more often).

Style Icons: Male »Pat Kiernan

NY1’s #1

You just don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone. Even though, thankfully, Pat Kiernan‘s absence from NY1’s morning news is only temporary (presumably he’s vacationing in Canada), it’s really made a dent in my morning ritual.

It’s little wonder that I’m definitely not the only New York that begins their day with the man; his dry wit and sense of humor hits exactly the right note with New Yorkers and I miss him.

Kristen Shaughnessy doesn’t even mercilessly poke fun at Roger Clark!

Style Icons: Male »Keith Morrison

Keith Morrison of NBC's Datelineof Dateline NBC

While I truly do love Jim Morrison (not only do we share the same birthday – we also have the same name! I’ve even been to his grave!), I’m also a huge fan of Dateline NBC correspondent Keith Morrison. It’s not smugness or incredulity (exactly) that you’re detecting in his voice; it’s just his unique aristocrat-specializing-in-drama tone. Love it!

Little did I know that Bill Hader is also a fan! Below/after the jump are a compilation of clips, the top three feature the man himself (for those of you unfamiliar with his work); the last two are Hader’s not-quite-spot-on-in-but-accurate-enough impersonation. Enjoy!

Style Icons: Female »Elvira

I vividly remember standing in front of a cardboard cutout of her in the grocery holding a pack of Coors, so in my mind I early learned that Elvira = Halloween + beer, and there's nothing wrong about that. Sure, Cassandra Peterson's shtick was not completely original, the lovely Vampira came before her, but beyond becoming the sex symbol of the scariest holiday, she's also a local girl who grew up dancing in gay bars in my hometown of Colorado Springs.

Style Icons: Female »Lynne Russell

All this fuss over little chipmunk Katie Couric is rather ridiculous when the real grand dame of television news is the elegant and often daringly dressed Lynne Russell. I grew up with the woman as a strong and beguiling source for melodious news information and, through the course of my research prepping this entry, have discovered that she's even more fantastic that I thought! From her site:

Yet Lynne's world is more than meets the eye. For years she has successfully balanced her journalism career and motherhood with her other “occupations”: deputy sheriff in Fulton County (Atlanta) Georgia as a jail officer, and licensed private investigator. She holds two black belts in the martial art Choi Kwang Do, and is a certified open water SCUBA diver.

All of this prompted her to write her inspirational first book, How to Win Friends, Kick Ass and Influence People (Dec. 1999, St. Martin's Press). She explores the liberating concepts of each of us appreciating and utilizing our own abilities and talents, peaceful coexistence with the opposite gender, and the celebration of “la difference!” Actor/comedian Richard Belzer says, “If Xena, warrior princess could tell her story, this would be her book.” The New York Times review quipped she's “a news anchor with the personality of a professional wrestler.”

If you weren't in love with her during the CNN years, I defy you to resist her now. She also makes beaded lampshades, has a line of makeup consisting of just one shade of red lipstick (which I'm about to purchase) and blush. Love!!!

Style Icons: Female »Martha Stewart

Queen of Taste

Just look at Martha hawling that greenery back to her homestead with sheer rosy cheek willpower and been to jail business magnate grit. Say what you will about the woman, but I love her. I think she got too much for her crime for being a successful (and some say unlikably ballsy) lady. I’ve heard first hand accounts that make her sound both unintentionally hideous and surprisingly witty, funny, and actually human.

I was never the hugest fan of her show, and found the MST3K type interpretation of it, Whatever Martha, to be disappointingly annoying as it could have been ingenous in the hands of better and funnier people. I have been an on and off again subscriber to her magazines though and there is really no denying her impact on the art of asthetics in the past few decades.

I think she ushered in the whole craft movement, even if it was sometimes in reaction to her. In general the idea of persuing good taste and making our surrounding pleasing has now become at least seemingly at everyone’s fingertips with her holiday decorating ideas and recipes.

She’s also tons of fun to read on her own blog, which she really actually seems to write herself.
