Drinks,Recipes »Watermelon Lemonade

Summer Perfection

While I wait to make this myself, I’d like to share this refreshing concoction of Watermelon Lemonade while the days are still so steamy.

Thanks to Chloe who made this for a recent party. It’s really a pregnant woman’s dream but, of course, delicious for everybody:

I used one of those mini watermelons. In 2 or 3 batches in my food processor i blended up the watermelon then put it through a sieve. Once it was all processed I put the whole batch trough the sieve again to take out more of the solids.

Juice of 5 or so lemons and a lime or two. Add to the watermelon juice.

Then I added maybe 1 part water and some simple syrup to taste (not necessary if you like it less sweet of course)- the turbinado sugar gives it a slightly more caramel flavor.

I like it diluted with seltzer too.

The photo comes from Smitten Kitchen, which has a similar recipe.

Drinks »Spindrift Sparkling Half and Half

20120228-091917.jpgA Fresh Take on Sodas

Arnold Palmers can be sparkling? I gave out an audible squeal when I saw the answer was yes.

Sprindrift makes a carbonated version of one of the most satisfying drinks known to man.

But beware, this one, though heather than regular soda, not for those with a wimpy sweet tooth.

I found it at the Meat Hook.

Drinks »Blood Orange Juice

20111028-120141.jpgItalian Organic

I always thought blood oranges differed from their more common brethren in looks only (silly me) but this Italian Organic bottle of blood orange juice has me rethinking that assumption.

I’m not a huge oj fan but have loved pouring this over seltzer for lunch. It almost tastes like raspberries.

Drinks »Bourbon Smash Jelly Shots

from Michelle Palm

Thank you, thank you, Jessica. If any broad can class up a Jello Shot, it’s her and she did so with these Birthday Bourbon Smash Jelly Shots.

The recipe comes from Jelly Shot Test Kitchen, an entire site dedicated to boozing up the jiggly dessert by Michelle Palm – who has a book coming out soon. (Note that Jessica substituted strawberry juice for the cranberry.)

Shaun claimed he tasted peanut butter, and before we could roll our eyes at him, I realized he was right! They are like pb&j for adults… or at least adults that partake in jello shots.

Drinks »Red Jacket Orchards Apple Cider

At Your Local Farmers Market

Apple cider is the unofficial taste of Autumn and until recently it was one I was never able to appreciate as much as others. Our weekly stop by the Farmer’s Market Saturday changed all that when I suddenly felt the urge to buy a 1/2 gallon from the ever popular Red Jacket Orchards booth. Red Jacket is a Finger Lakes Region orchard that should be very familiar to anyone that buys at local farmers markets. Freshly pressed whole fruit without added sugars, coloring, water or flavoring, there’s is the most natural and refreshing. They also sell seasonal fruit juices that I assume are equally tasty.

Drinks »Mint Watermelon Lemonade

at The Big Booty Bread Co, 261 West 23rd St

I really don’t think that while I was waddling the streets of Chelsea in the heat that I could have dreamt up anything more appealing than a sign telling me to “cool off” with “Mint Watermelon Lemonade”. It was The Big Booty Bread Co, which I recommended years ago for their sweets, that was offering this lovely refreshing beverage that sounded like the elixir of the gods to me (mint, watermelon and lemonade?? in one drink?? genius!) and it was heavenly. Here’s a recipe over at Smitten Kitchen if you care to make it yourself (just add mint).

Drinks »Jamaica Agua Fresca

Hibiscus Tea Juice, can be found at Vamos al Tequila at 162 Franklin Street

Let me introduce you to the most refreshing summertime beverage you’ve never heard of (and if you have, I envy you – wish I had known about it sooner): Jamaica Agua Fresca. It was introduced to me at the new, quite good Greenpoint Mexican restaurant Vamos al Tequila (picture below from New York Shitty). Our sweetheart of a waitress described it as a hibiscus made juice that is similar to cranberry without the tartness, and that’s pretty accurate. I am not sure how available this drink is, but it’s worth seeking out while we endure these heatwaves.

Drinks »Arnold Palmer

Lemonade and Ice Tea

The Arnold Palmer has always been a splendid beverage. The sweet tartness of the lemonade is tempered by the refreshing iced tea with wonderful results… but let me tell you, when you’re pregnant, it’s that great times a million.

Drinks »Watermelon Juice

Easy and Refreshing

I was introduced to the refreshing greatness of Watermelon Juice at Fatty Cue, where it is used in their Chupacabra cocktail (tequila, chili infused Domaine de Canton, watermelon, lime). But as I can not currently booze it up, I asked for it straight up. I was hoping it would be easy to make at home and was pleased to find it could hardly be easier. Just toss cubed watermelon in a blender a voila! I plan to add some jalapeno kick to my next batch and maybe a bit of lime, but it really doesn’t need any fancy extras.

On a side note, I remember watching Family Feud as a kid with Playmates and one chose Watermelon Juice as a red beverage. We all laughed at her for being stupid, but maybe she was wiser than we gave her credit for.

Drinks »McClure’s Bloody Mary Mix

From the Pickle Makers

Wow, this McClure’s Bloody Mary Mixer (perfect for those of us that can’t drinks but like the illusion) is not for the faint hearted. All of you the poo poo bland bloodies without kick? I’d be very surprised if you could find any fault here. Even as a pickle juice drinker, I have to cut it with some seltzer (made with my new soda stream, of course).

The pickle makers concoction boasts pickle brine (not surprising) as well as tomato paste, cucumber juice and spice.

The mix is sold out on line but can be found in various local retailers and markets.

Drinks »Agua Fresca

Cha Cha Chicken has become a common office phrase, embedded in our minds since a coworker first recommended the quirky sounding restaurant in Santa Monica. Our recent trip finally offered the opportunity to eat there and their rich spicy jerk sauce is phenomenal (count this as a bonus restaurant pick of the week).

It was the agua fresca, however, that really drove me wild. Available in mango-guava, watermelon, cantaloupe, lemonade, and tropical iced tea, I tried my friend's watermelon and downed two mango-guavas myself.

Made simply with fresh fruit juice, water and sugar, agua fresca is a traditional Mexican beverage made to accompany the spiciness of food. I'm totally on the look out for this miraculous refreshment here in the city.

Drinks »Strawberry Orange Julius

strawberry orange juliusAside from dragging my mom out to the Chapel Hills mall, reopening Contempo Casuals, popping a babydoll dress and doc martens on me, and having “Heaven is a Place on Earth” blasting, there are very few things that could take me back to my awkward tweens more than the sweet, sweet frothy pleasure of a strawberry Orange Julius. Just like the once mighty Z. Cavaricci, it's an empire that's faded with time and higher standards and you'd be hard pressed to find a store to fulfill this nostalgic treat.

Tinton Falls (which I once described in great detail on this very blog) is one of the recent malls still sporting the chain. And while the option of “extra egg whites” is no longer on the menu and the fact that, like a recently divorced dad it has to share a pad with Dairy Queen, the Julius was as tasty as those adolescent days where every living idiot boy was a vague (and eventually disappointing) romance waiting to happen, notebooks were littered with doodles and heartfelt poetry, and gossiping on the school's front lawn with your closest girlfriends was the center of your entire week.
