Haagen Dazs takes me back to my childhood, back when my dad used to have a goldenrod tee-shirt with a Haagen Dazs logo in brown. I still love that shirt, but I haven’t had a scoop of Haagen Dazs in years – but friends have been raving about their new ‘Five’ brand.
The idea is simple: ice cream made from only five ingredients. It’s a refreshing option today when most store bought foods are loaded with who knows what. Best of all, they’re really tasty – both the coffee and passion fruit have been huge hits and I’m looking forward to trying the mint and brown sugar.

Years ago a good friend used to always insist on getting frogurt at Bloomies. She's since moved out of the city, but her love for Four Carrots frozen goodness came to my mind the other day and I was pleased to find that it's available in the SoHo location as well as the flagship.
It's not cheap – but really, what is anymore? But you do get a whole honking load of it, even when you order the small size. They also made me extra smiley by layering tons of the rainbow sprinkles between each swirl of peanut butter, which was the flavor of the day.
Ronnybrook Farms has thrilled me before with their spectacular milkshakes and tasty yogurt, so you can imagine my love for their seasonally flavored Blueberry Ice Cream.
We picked up this sweet refreshing treat from the local Farmer's Market (see this weeks what to do with a couple minutes) and you can too at several market locations and their Chelsea Market store.
** Since I began writing this, we have also tried their coconut flavor that features chocolate covered almonds and is equally mind blowingly delicious.
I seem to remember Tasti D Lite as tasteless coldness, but when my coworker's birthday arrived and we recalled her love for the calorie conscious chain, we looked into birthday cakes and after trying them, I looked on the frozen dessert with new eyes.
It was light and refreshing and the favors were far more distinct than I had remembered. It was one of the only office birthday parties (of which there are many) that I wasn't craving a sugar high crash nap after.
Cherry Garcia tastes like innocence and summer and no sunny season is complete without at least one cup.
I first tried it (and Ben and Jerry's in general) when I was attending pre college in 1995, my first major time spent away from home and the first year the company began making frozen yogurt versions of their most popular flavors (which are about 100 calories less than their ice cream per serving).
As I'm sure you are aware, the frozen delight is named after the late Grateful Dead front-man Jerry.
While I have loudly extolled the virtues of Van Leeuwen artisanal ice cream here already, it's absolutely worth revisiting to tell you about their new flavor: Earl Grey Tea! It's wonderful and perfect with their excellent whipped cream.
The truck can now be found on weekends outside the Bedford Avenue L stop, which just made my summer a whole lot sweeter.
For “the queerest dairy treats in NYC” head over to the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, a roaming traditional soft serve truck with daily changing premium toppings like fresh blueberries and ginger crisps.
We went for the more traditional vanilla with butterscotch toppings, yum! and enjoyed the bonus of friendly service.
To find out where the truck will be parked next, stay tuned to his blog (soon he'll be perched outside previous Brix Pick The Phoenix).
Ralph's Italian Ices are a treat I always cherish anytime I'm in Oyster Bay, preferably after a meal of steamer clams served by teenage girls at the seafood place that sits next to the Ralph's drive-thru. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would ever be able to simply walk to a Ralph's this summer any day I pleased, but news that a Ralph's set up shop just past the BQE is going to make my summer a whole lot better.
There are just so many flavors I have yet to try (I tend to stick to vanilla chip) but I started with the toasted marshmallow which was excellent. The small is big enough to share, and I can't even imagine what kind of mad man would attempt the “small bucket” size.
For true connoisseurs of the Italian ice, you'll be happy to know that Ralph's rival, Uncle Louie G's is just down the street on the same block. Rivalry never tasted so good.
We've been meaning to make the short walk to Corner Frenzy down the block because a. it's got the best store name of all, b. it's a laundry mat and an ice cream window in one, c. you order your ice cream off a hot pink tarp roped to the side of the building, and d. it's dirt cheap.
Peanut Butter soft serve and mango slushies (less chemically sweet than the gross dog version we all know) for a dollar and change a piece makes for almost perfect hot weather relief. I say almost because, if it's really hot and you (like Jim) have a massive beard, you are going to get messier than you've been in a long time. Ask for napkins friends.
With Spring being a wet, gray joke of a season thus far, we New Yorkers tend to go ape any day the weather even remotely resembles the traditional Springtime sunshine and blooming flowers of our collective fantasies. On a recent bizarro 60 degree afternoon, nestled between days with lows in the 20s, I decided to pretend that Spring had finally arrived in earnest and headed over to Red Mango for some frozen yogurt.
To be honest, I can't tell much of a difference between their green tea flavor and that of their competitors, and a scoop is always costs more than I expect, but I was thrilled with the option of adding a little scoop of that great sugary cereal, Cap'n Crunch (though no crunch berries, sadly) to the mix. The combo was surprisingly delicious and I couldn't have felt any happier as I walked down the street with the yogurt slowly melting in my hands.
Michelle’s house was always to funnest to stay for sleepovers in junior high and high school, her little terrier Mikey coming down to smell our breathe in the morning aside, it was a teenage dream. The basement was all ours and it had a pool table and sleeping bags, the boys we allowed to occasionally hang out with us lived nearby and we always ate at least one bowl of cake batter a night.
The icing on the cake, almost literally was in the morning when we were allowed to prepare waffles with mint chocolate chip ice cream for breakfast.
Jim and I indulged in this decadent breakfast today and it made me feel less of an adult, ready to go to the mall and check out boys.
