Style Icons: Female »Esther Williams

Much like Elvis, Esther Williams starred in films that were… less than acclaimed. It was her charm and stunning, theatrical swim routines that made them watchable.

If you’ve never seen one, take a look and enjoy some innocent fun with lots of splash. At the very least view some of the YouTube tributes to the effervescent star of screen and pool. Williams was 91 when she passed away last week.

Hunks »Steve Olson

Hunky Skateboarder

Skateboard culture has always been one of perpetual adolescence. A boys club of daredevilry, snotty behavior and high-fiving asinine antics. No one embodies this quite as well or for so long as Steve Olson.

Now a worn out greying “artist” who dates famous women, he looks like a sleaze ball you’d expect to see in an LA gallery snug between Olivier Zahm and some tits. But then, he’s also still dashingly handsome… and in the prime of his youth? I would have wept to twelve year old fantasies of romance with him – had I known of his existence.

Hunks »Johnny Weissmuller

He, Tarzan

Johnny Weissmuller is probably the most recognizable Tarzan and definitely the hunkiest. One of the world’s best swimmers, he won many Olympic medals and set world records in the sport before he went Hollywood.

Style Icons: Male »The Hanson Brothers

hanson brothers slap shotNot to be confused with the Oakie teenie boppers, these Hanson Brothers are all about busting heads and drawing blood. The center piece of the beloved underdog sports movie Slap Shot, the brothers are over-zealous child-like hockey dudes that bring fame and attention to Paul Newman's failing west Pennsylvania team. Every time they're on screen, whether picking a fight with a snack machine, yelling in the locker room, or just playing with toy cars, I couldn't help but laugh. While the film is more of an underground classic, it's known and loved by most anyone that's seen it.

The brothers were played by the real life Carlson brothers, Steve and Jeff. Third brother Jack's hockey career conflicted with shooting and Dave Hanson, whose pro hockey nickname was “Killer”, got the gig.

If you too are a fan, local designer and Brix Picks fave Built By Wendy was inspired by the characters and made this awesome tee with emblazoned with their visages.
