Spend a Couple Minutes »Follow Chris Hadfield

Untitled-1

Orbiting the Earth

Twitter, once a thing I could barely understand the point of, has since become a source for instant (but not incessant) news, laughs… and now phenomenal views of earth from space!

For amazing, magical images follow astronaut Chris Hadfield as he chronicles his orbit around our planet. (He is also chatting and answering questions on reddit.)

Honestly, the photos will make you feel a childlike sense of wonder and amazement.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Toca Boca Games

tocaGreat Apps for Kids

I’ve been meaning to recommend the catalog of charming, well designed and fun toddler apps from Toca Boca for some time since they are an invaluable resource for parents.

I’ve downloaded all of them and find each one delightful but am personally partial to Toca Tailor (where you makes clothes for quirky characters). Van’s interests rotate but he has always loved Robot Lab and playing Toca Kitchen Monsters with his dad.

Some games like Toca Doctor and Toca House have objectives, while others like Toca Salon are more open ended.

I never feel guilty about letting Van play with these games for a bit, in fact, I usually join in the fun. With so much junk targeted at kids it’s nice to find a company that seems to actually think of and enjoy children when designing for them.

Laughs »Seinfeld Today

on Twitter

Seinfeld ended on a high note, when it was still universally loved and quoted and before it spiraled into mediocrity as so many shows can.

Or so I thought. The latest twitter darling account @seinfeldtoday makes me wonder. Maybe the show could have stayed relevant and hilarious for years.

At the very least the humorous imaginings of modern day episodes make me miss it.

Here are a couple choice examples:

@SeinfeldToday: George can’t tell if his boss is being sarcastic in an email. “There should be a different font, Jerry!” Kramer watches too much cable news.

And

@SeinfeldToday: George breaks up w/ his gf (Gretchen Mol) because she’s ruining his Netflix suggestions w/ her shows. Newman claims to be part of Anonymous.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Dark Sky

20120515-204110.jpgiPhone App

No weather forecast is more annoying than a 30% chance of rain all day. It basically means nothing.

Optimists could get caught in the rain while others could plan a whole day indoors (particularly if you’ve got a little one) only to realize after the fact that you could have gone outside after all.

Dark Sky, which I heard about on NY1, puts an end to the doubt.

It does one thing and one thing only: accurately let you know if it will be raining where you are in the next hour.

It’s been quite useful to me and is well worth the few dollars.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Draw Something

20120315-230601.jpgApp

Welcome to my latest dumb obsession, Draw Something. Sure, like all game apps I’ve recommended here, I’ll tire of this Pictionary-esque game in the not too distant future but for now draw some is awe some.

(Oh, and for the record, just writing the word is cheating and beside the point and I end games with such swindlers.)

Spend a Couple Minutes,Web Sites »Instagram

Awesome App

Like Twitter it took me a while to “get” Instagram (and not just me judging by how many friends have posted one or no photos).

Not only does it have it’s own language, the purpose is individual.

I’ve found that it’s a lovely way to document the days. Like a visual journal. Glimpsing others’ lives is also fun.

Sure, it’s strange at first to share images with the public, but unless you put effort into getting followers you won’t have too many looking anyways.

The filters are great and the coolest part is that you apply them after the photo is taken and get previews before applying them.

It takes some of the surprise of say a Polaroid or even the Hipstamatic away but at the same time you won’t lose a great photo to a bad filter.

If you want to get started with a few good people to follow let me recommend:

Manrepeller – style shots with lots of rad jewelry

Freepeople – serious office envy

Cocorocha – super model life

Davidlebovitz – Paris food awesomeness

Miwaramone – dreamy shots of food and more from Japan

Refinery29 – one of my favorite sites with a great feed. Recent Bangkok photos amazed

And of course me! Bhague

A few of my photos and ones from the people listed above are below.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Words With Friends

Iphone App

I’ve jumped on the Words with Friends bandwagon and it’s as addicting as I had expected (very). I seem to win about 50% of the time.

If you are my real life friend, my name is brixpicks – come find me.

If you’re not my real life friend, I’ll still play but won’t respond to messages, like “What’s your name cutie?” and “You keep blocking me!”
