Funny Kitty

We all know Maru, we all love Maru. Has there been a more lovable pet that’s not your own?

The round tabby with a penchant for wearing boxes and bags is even more lovable when you show videos to your two year old who giggles uncontrollably.

Laughs »Werner Herzog Explains Chickens

Chickens Are Easy to Hypnotize

I’ve said for years that I could listen to Werner Herzog talk about anything for hours… Much to my surprise and delight, listening to Werner Herzog talk about anything has become an Internet trend!

The latest? He discusses the amazing stupidity of chickens.

If you are craving more Werner, try one of our favorites: Burden of Dreams or the short doc Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe.

Laughs »Polite Bear Waves Hello

on Youtube

I’m not sure what it is about animals affecting human mannerisms that’s so hilarious, but friends and I just can’t get over this polite bear waving hello. You can almost hear him say “oh helloo there!”

Places to Visit »Nettle Meadow Farm

Thurman, NY – Guest Written by Mike Stermer

Hidden away on a rural route in the Adirondacks, Nettle Meadow is an idealist goat farm.  Founded 5 years ago by a couple in the midst of mid life crisis, Nettle Meadow is farming at it’s best.  Not only do each of their 300 goats have names, but Lorraine, one of the co-owners who gave us a free tour, knows each and every one of their names.  The goats, along with their sheep neighbors, all lend their milk to their artisan cheeses made on the farm.  They make several varieties.  The flavored chevres that we tasted were only two days old, fresh from the goats.  They even have 3 varieties of ages cheeses, aged in the 200 year old stone basement of the farm house.  Their “Kunik” is a not to be missed semi-aged cheese with a super creamy texture.

It’s really nice to see a small family owned farm doing things with care, and worrying about quality and not quantity.  The goats are all treated quiet well.  Unlike many other farms they allow their goats to naturally grow their horns out. In the back of the farm they have 7 acres of free range roughage to roam through.  The largest and oldest of the barns they use as a sanctuary for rescue animals including a thoroughbred horse with an injured leg, cow calves, chickens, roosters, ducks and even a peacock. They even use llamas as sheep dogs to help the keep away the wilds.
Of course their cheeses can be found at local restaurants in the Lake George, but they also venture out much future than that.  NYC’s Murray’s cheese as well as many local eateries carry lines of their cheese as well.  So if you can’t make it up there for a Saturday or Sunday free tour at noon, be sure to search out some of their cheese and taste farm food done right.

Laughs »Winston the Cat

Kitty Pride

I love fourfour and the “kitty pride” segments, featuring that other Brooklyn exotic shorthair (my dearest Tiptoe isn’t the only one!) named Winston have been giving me so much pleasure lately.

The E.T. Halloween costume is one of my favorite things on earth, and the site features many videos.

TV Shows »Life

on Discovery

Like the producer’s other show, Planet Earth, Life is awe inspiring and fantastic. But, and I’m probably going to get run down by one of her personal drivers for saying this, Oprah does not posses what one would call a melodious voice.

Chosen strictly for her status as confoundedly being one of the famous people on earth, she’s just not the exact person I would have chosen to describe verbally the wonders of animal life. But I’m sure I’ll get the British narrated ones on DVD, so I’ll move past this blunder.

Divided into species, each hour-long episode is transporting and features hunting, mating rituals, escape tactics and more that have never been captured on film before. I can’t recommend it enough.

Books »Catwalk Cats

by Grace Coddington and Didier Malige (2006)

Fashion and cats! That’s a sure-fire combo for a perfect birthday present and my very kind co-workers knew it when they got me Grace Coddington and Didier Malige‘s totally charming The Catwalk Cats.

Consisting of quirky line drawings by Coddington and stunning photographs by Malige of their pets Henri, Coco, Baby, Puff and Bart, the book is a delight. The drawings of the cats in designer clothing are incredible.

Web Sites »The Catalyst

While Googling 'cat fashion' (because how else would I unwind while half-watching Glee and eating cereal late at night?) I found the wonderful little blog Catalyst, and in it a kindred spirit who not only loves cats and fashion, but geodesic domes!!?/p>

I'm bummed that author Jenny didn't stick it out longer than a year or so, but the near year of imagery is a fun and inspirational way to pass the time, even if it is finite.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Unleash Brooklyn

Unleash Brooklyn is such a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Not only is there now a near by pet store with truly helpful employees, but the food is healthier and not made with any questionable animal parts or practices. I Hop and Tiptoe (my adorable kitties) are particularly huge fans of the Evo brand Duck.

Even more impressive than the retail store are the facilities for boarding dogs and cats. The dogs get individual beds and a devoted caretaker that even sleeps nights in the same room. Kitties get impressive individual condos as well as a larger area for play.

Everyone that works here is devoted to animals and the stores philosphy:

“Quite simply, we built Unleash Brooklyn for our dogs and cats. We wanted a local place where our pets would receive top-notch care during the day or for an extended period of time.

Unleash Brooklyn is “Green” We built Unleash Brooklyn using recycled, shock-absorbing rubber mats and repurposed lumber. Our cleaning products are green and we implement earth-friendly materials whenever possible.

The concept behind our holistic loft is to bring some of the best professionals in pet care under one roof to redefine the standard of daycare and overnight boarding for dogs and cats.”

Drinks »Beer Island

You may want to go the way we did and get bleary eyed over several beers at Nathans before daring to enter Beer Island at Coney. Even with the veil of Budweiser, the cigarette butt strewn, vomit stained, port-o-potty lined box of sand is glaring to the eye and seems like a dangerous place to spend our time. But spend our time we did.

After all, there was entertainment – if you count burly cretins walking around with unsafe pythons (with their faces taped shut with scotch tape because they bite) and parrots that the pythons are trying to eat. Tons of seedy fun.
