Contrary to the general upbeat sound of girl bands from the 60s, the Shangri-Las were quite morbid, with “Leader of the Pack“, a tearful tale of a wrong side of the tracks boyfriend's death, as their biggest hit. Remember… Walking in the Sand is even eerier, sung by twins Marge and Mary Anne Ganser and siblings Mary and Betty Weiss with a crescendo of desperation that is both beautiful and unsettling set between almost whispered moments of quiet. A great song from a great and often overlooked band.
But what do you think?
