Soda Re-Imagined

Innovation in American companies belongs to the little guys. While Pepsi and Coke are fighting the fact that soda is bad for us with lobbyists, rather than offering alternatives, Dry has re-imagined soda and made it better for you, better tasting, and all natural.

Like many of you, cutting soda out of my life  was an easy healthy step but if I were to indulge in a bubbly drink – and now that summer’s almost here, it does sound enticing – this low calorie Lavender Soda is perfect.

I’d love to try their other flavors as well: Lemongrass, Blood Orange, Rhubarb, Juniper Berry, Vanilla Bean and Cucumber. I can only imagine that these also make incredible cocktails.

I tried a bottle in Colorado but found that you can purchase several places in NY including Marlow and Sons, Fairway and Whole Foods.

Teen Heart Throb

I could never get behind the Blue Lagoon perm, but this shirtless, short short, tennis shoe wearing, smiling, prepster Christopher Atkins in the boat? Now, that’s a teen heart throb I can get behind.

Besides, what young girl/gay boy didn’t dream that their future days of romance would include such a vista as this photo shoot?

directed by Michael Haneke (2009)

The White Ribbon very much reminds me of a classic “man’s inhumanity towards man” novel taught in high schools and is far more interesting than all the bratty kids reading it will give it credit for. It questions whether man is inherently evil and if you’ve ever seen a Michael Haneke movie, you’ll not be surprised that his answer is yes.

I can even envision the reading comprehension questions at the back of the non existent text book:

1. Who do you think committed all the crimes? And what was their motive?

2. Is the narrator correct in his accusations?

3. What do you think happened to the midwife and her son? What about the Doctor and his family?

All questions I’ve been pondering and frankly wish I had a classroom of people who’ve seen it to discuss.

Several disturbing acts of violence erupt in a small German village before the break out of World War I. From torture to arson, the crimes are as heinous as they are confounding and Haneke, once again proving he’s one the most compelling and daring film makers working today, isn’t as forthcoming as he seems. These troubling times are told through the eyes of a kind school teacher as he falls in love with a local governess, lending a small glimmer of benevolence among the cruelty.

The film is absolutely beautiful, not only is the cinematography stunning and sweeping, but the details of costume and set are superb. This is a cold, severe, yet elegant take on the themes we love so well in Nick Cave’s “The Curse of Millhaven”, Village of the Damned and Lord of the Flies. The children are impeccably cast.

It is available on netflix instant and I hope that will allow it to find a wider audience despite it’s deliberate pace.

at the Met thru July 31

The Alexander McQueen exhibit, Savage Beauty at the Met is extraordinary as McQueen was the most extraordinary of designers. To see his fantastic creations in person is awe inspiring and the Met has done an unusually wonderful job of displaying them dramatically and respectfully.

Of course, like any fashion show at the museum it can test ones patience with all the crowds (at one point it was literally shoulder to shoulder) but if ever a show were worth the inconvenience this is it.

The exhibit spans the whole of his career and leaves one not only breathtaken at the details and imagination but heart broken as well. I was more moved after walking through than I expected and found myself with a knot in my stomach and a bit teary eyed by the end to know such an amazing talent is gone.

I couldn’t help but act like I still had pre-baby disposable income and splurged on the gorgeous, hologram covered book (Happy Mother’s Day to me!) but wisely, the museum has offered more affordable souvenirs including a very nice calendar and a pretty humorous armadillo high heel paper weight.

This is a must see!

I know that slathering mayonnaise on food doesn’t appeal to everyone and I admit this turned out looking a little more like a burnt marshmallow than I expected, but I promise this simple three ingredient Scallion Crusted Arctic Char is delicious.

I found the recipe on epicurious after seeing an Iron Chef char battle and wanting to prepare the salmon and trout like fish.
