Hunks »Shel Silverstein
Poet, Illustrator, Musician, Generally Awesome Guy
Shel Silverstein was a big part of my childhood, probably like many of you. I grew up reading his books and once was so haunted by one of his cassettes that I brought it to my mom crying asking her to hide it from me since, even though it terrified me, I couldn’t stop listening to it.
A talented artist, wit and musician, you can also see he was a first rate babe. Can’t you just envision him teaching a class in old school butchering or being one of the only men that wouldn’t look lame holding a guitar down on the Williamsburg waterfront? Straight up heart melter, the kind that even dudes can get psyched about (just look at the joy in Dustin Hoffman’s face just to be hanging out with him).
He sadly passed away a little over a decade ago and suffered several tragedies in his own life including the early death of a wife and daughter. He gave the world much joy though with his quirky, awesome books.

Recipes »Chicken Papaya Stir Fry
from Food and Wine
I make a lot of stir frys so finding this Chicken Papaya Stir Fry recipe was exciting for the list of unusual ingredients.
I wasn’t sure of the papaya and orange juice would make for a far too sweet dish, but with the salty seasonings and poblanos, they were mellow and delicious.

Style Icons: Female »Nadja Auermann
Supermodel of the 90’s
I am really feeling this whole 1990’s super model thing, so let’s keep it going shall we with the absolutely stunning Nadja Auermann.
She could be the Ice Queen, the Valkyrie, the feline, the glamor-puss, though I preferred her in her least captured state – natural and smiling. A timeless icon no matter what the look, Nadja is spectacular.
She gives off a unique vibe in every photo, as you can plainly see from the images below (oh, and by the way – the 90’s white background Bazaar covers that featured actual super models looking incredible instead of half talent actresses looking like cover of Lucky? Yeah that was an era to remember fondly).
Though her name didn’t loom as large as some of the other supermodels of the time, the German beauty has a look all her own and made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the model with the longest legs (44 inches). Now she models when she feels like it but is mostly and happily a mom.
I also just learned she is in courts fighting accusations of tax evasion in Germany. (I have a knack for getting people on the brain when they are about to be involved in some scandal).

Spend a Couple Minutes »Christie’s Auction App
Auction Goodness
Since I love the Christie’s website, I’ve had the iphone app installed for some time but only just tried it out. It’s great!
With one thumb I can peruse the latest auctions, view all the items in an easy viewable grid format, see full size images, and email to friends.
Here are just a few favorites from the upcoming Latin American Sale (oh, to be a millionaire – that Botero would be hanging in my wall).

Style Icons: Male »Randy Savage
Wrestling Superstar
Randy Savage aka Macho Man was an American icon. His recent death came as a shock. Most everyone of a certain age, wrestling fan or not, knows him as the Snap into a Slim Jim guy in the series of commercials that are nostalgically awesome – “Are’t thou bored?!”
It was his flamboyant, insane WWF persona however that made him a star. If you missed his antics the first time around, now is a great time to catch up on the world of Macho Man. A simple youtube search will reveal all sorts of gems.
Only in the world of wrestling can you find the drama of over the top acting, the amazement of incredible physical feats, and the pizazz of out of this world costumes (and let’s be honest, the jackets Macho Man is sporting? They’d sell for a ridiculous amounts at Opening Ceremony today). Randy Savage was a master of the all the theatrics.
So put on Pomp and Circumstance and raise a glass to a unique icon that will be missed.
