TV Shows »5 Second Review: 2 Broke Girls

on CBS

So this is what Brooklyn looks like to people that have never been here.

Question: Since 2 Broke Girls will air to everyone’s mom and dads waiting for Two and a Half Men, does that mean that hipster bashing and red velvet cupcakes will finally become lame?

And this is really just common sense: cheesy laugh tracks and jokes about dried up vaginas simply do not mix.

Spend a Couple Hours »Marie Nails

155 Prince Street

Hooray for neon gradient calgel manicure from Marie Nails!

Just the break I needed from weeks of difficult sleep with the little one.

It’s a luxury but a much more affordable one than other spots in the city.

The trade off is a no frills, no AC environment but that didn’t bother me at all.

The nail technicians are very talented and polite while the possibilities endless.

Few tips though:

First, book early especially for a weekend appointment. (I booked myself for next month at the end of my visit.) They fill up quick and have people coming one after the other.

Which leads to tip number two. Research and ask for exactly what you want when booking. Some nail art takes much longer than others and they won’t be able to accommodate for trickier stuff with the tight schedule.

Third, cash only.

Fourth, some elements to a manicure like cuticle care may be additional small costs… just chill! It still ends up being a relative bargain.

I plan on getting a reverse French manicure next and can’t wait. I really love this place.

Drinks »Eiko Fuji Namasake

20110922-125937.jpgJunmai Ginjo Nama Genshu

Not since Wakatake have I fallen so in love with a sake. Eiko Fuji, like Wakatake was introduced to me by the ever excellent Zenkichi (the photo is a hand written reminder from the waiter).

It has the most pleasant scent and a pillowy, lush and almost creamy taste before ending cleanly.

It’s far more delicate than most namas (unpasteurized sake) we’ve tried and I hope I can wrangle up a bottle for a future special occasion.

Books »A Song of Ice and Fire

by George R R Martin (1996-????)

There’s so much to say about the epic Song of Ice and Fire series but so little you want to give away to those still buried within its thousands of pages.

Like so many others I picked the books up after loving the HBO adaptation… and what a fun time to be reading it. It’s the kind of book you want to discuss with people incessantly and there’s no shortage of fellow readers. Jim even texted me after especially incendiary chapters in disbelief.

With that kind of fervor and enthusiasm that the books evoke, George R.R. Martin has created something truly unique and it’s little wonder that the world is entranced.

I was as well as heartbroken, shocked (repeatedly and effectively), obsessed, angered, relieved, frustrated, awed and now after just finishing Dance with Dragons filled with a venomous ache for justice, some conclusions and frankly for some plot lines to get on with it already… ( I felt like Martin Sheen thinking “Mereen, shit I’m still only in Mereen”)

Yes it’s not without its flaws one cringe worthy sex scene where cock and cunt cant be told apart proves that but what’s harder for this reader is the scattered scope after the whirlwind of awesomeness in book three. The plot splits between two books and beloved characters aren’t seen for hundreds upon hundreds of pages. I can only imagine how frustrating this must have been for readers that had to wait years for the next book as I am about to do for book six.

But despite the flaws and the fact that it might never be completed, this is one extraordinary reading experience. Now I get to see how book two is interpreted on the show… too excited.

Desserts »Honeycomb Chocolate

20110920-112844.jpgfrom Liddabit Sweets

A sign for homemade candy bars drew Jim and I back into Smorgasburg just as we were about to leave only slightly on the side of gluttony.

How could we resist crunchy spongey honeycomb dipped in dark chocolate?

I’ve seen Liddabit candies at various shops around town but this was the first I’ve tried.

A spectacular first impression. I only wish more came in a bag.

TV Shows »5 Second Review: The Secret Circle

Thumbs Say Not Bad For What It Is

Mr. Dawson’s Creek spent a long, empty headed weekend with the repeat viewings of the Twilight movies and The Craft and came to the logical conclusion…

Teenage witches! But they will live in the Pacific Northwest and drive trucks!

There will be one crazy bitch that’s mad with witchy power and magical glittery stuff will happen in the woods!

(OK, to be fair, the storyline comes from a series of books, so the derivative elements might not be his fault)

Greenlight!

Maybe it’s because I find Britt Robertson charming or that I have a soft spot for young adult entertainment, but I have to say The Secret Circle bests both the inspirations. Which is kind of faint praise (especially in the case of Twilight) but still.

If the shows finds its sense of humor and goes wild it could be fun though it’s doubtful I’ll personally watch and wait (such hopefulness didn’t totally pay off with Supernatural.)

Spend a Couple Hours »Queens County Fair

Queens County Farm Museum, 73-50 Little Neck Parkway

Pigs, chickens, alpacas and beer! Here, here!

The Queens County Fair may not be the biggest in the country (we plan on going to that one some day) but we had a great time.

Nice to show Van actual animals that he’s read about in books and nice for Jim and I to enjoy one last outdoor Oktoberfest ale in a plastic cup.

We just missed a pig race and were too early for the arm wrestling but will probably be more into the scheduled activities next year when Van’s a little older.

Have always loved the Queens County Farm Museum and their various special events (see Thunderbird American Indian Mid-Summer Pow Wow).

A nice piece of rural living only a short drive away.

TV Shows »5 Second Review: The New Girl

Thumbs Way Down

Ouch.

I might just owe Gargamel an apology because Free Agents is almost looking pretty good right now.

Was expecting something decent from The New Girl but this is very and weirdly terrible.

Restaurants »La Buena Gazpacho

At Smorgasburg

La Buena Gazpacho from chef Alexandra Raij is so crazy delicious, I wish I had had gallons to enjoy over the Summer.

Perhaps a date night to one of her restaurants, Txikito and El Quinto Pino should be on our agenda…
