Restaurants »The Brooklyn Star

593 Lorimer Street

Our recent Southern fried, stick to your bones meal at The Brooklyn Star was full of happy surprises and familiar comforting tastes.

With a menu split between small and big plates the four of us split four smalls, two bigs and left sated but not stuffed.

Oh and we also got the piping hot bacon jalapeno cornbread. An appropriate intro to what was to come. Definitely a must.

Next came a fresh lemony kale salad that even veggiephobes will rave about, a nice oyster taco (which was good but not extraordinary), and spicy chicken wings that went beyond the usual pub fare with a smoky sweetness and plump meaty wings.

The biggest surprise on the small plates was the beef tongue served two ways. I have only known the dish tp be thinly sliced and cold but the shredded pickled version and the tender grilled slab were eye opening and possibly the best bites of the night.

Big plates were excellent too. I kind of pulled for us to order the hulking chicken friend steak, a personal favorite thanks to my hometowns Barneys Diner but admittedly love shared by many and a bit of an acquired taste.Their tender version could definitely turn some skeptics though and made me very happy.

The roasted chicken was also pretty phenomenal. Brined and garlicky, it melted in our mouths and reinforced my idea that chicken is better left to the pros. In my hands, it turns dull and overcooked but at a good restaurant the roasted chicken will never disappoint.

Drinks, like a spicy margarita and a smoky old fashioned were great accompaniment.
and the atmosphere was friendly (the scent of apple cider and smiling staff greet you), candle lit (my photos are a bummer so look to flickr for better ones) and uncluttered.

Spend a Couple Hours »Thompson LES Pool

190 Allen St

We were lucky enough to have friends staying at the sleek Thompson LES Hotel recently and were able to enjoy their balcony pool. Well, truth be told Van enjoyed it most of all.

The place is far friendlier than I expected. Even patient and nice about the kids. Plus there’s wine and cocktails for adults.

Not a bad place to recommend to visiting friends and family. Just be sure to hit them up for pool rights in the warm months!

Style Icons: Female »Poly Styrene

Original Riot Grrl

No front woman before or since has quite been like Poly Styrene.

Round faced and wide eyed, she looked about twelve years old when she was shouting up yours as the face of the Xray Spex (who I am getting acquainted with thanks to Spotify) one of the most influential punk bands of the 1970s.

Sporting braces and a smile she was a rebel among rebels. Her performances were lively and punctuated by neon outfits, hard hats, and wild mini dresses.

Styrene, whose real name was Marianne Joan Elliott-Said sadly passed away earlier this year but undoubtedly influenced countless young girls in her lifetime and beyond.

TV Shows »American Horror Story

Thumbs See Potential

Too much too soon American Horror Story! No need to blow your whole jump cut editing wad in the first episode. There’s everything to be said about a slow burn when it comes to horror.

Maybe you’ll calm down and realize your potential with time. I hope so.

Spend a Couple Minutes »Natural History at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

20111012-121811.jpgby Patrick Dougherty

Sometimes we forget what great, beautiful resources we have for outdoor fun in the city. I hadn’t been to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in some time but enjoyed the surprisingly gorgeous weather introducing Van to koi, grass (which he’s still skeptical of) and roses.

I also really loved the Natural History sculptures by Patrick Dougherty. They feel both natural and otherworldly. Wish we had one of these stick huts to hang out in all the time.

Hunks »Gregory Peck

Atticus Finch

Dignity. It is the word that comes to mind when you think of Gregory Peck both with his personal convictions and his iconic role as the justice seeking, perfect father figure Atticus Finch.

Handsome would be the other word that comes to mind.

Check him out in hipster beard mode below, growl!

Books »A Rage in Harlem

by Chester Himes (1957)

It’s a shame that the name Chester Himes  is not as well know as Raymond Chandler or Elmore Leonard. His colorful mix of humor, poetic despair, violence, and action put him on par with the best noir writers. A Rage in Harlem is my first Himes read but definitely won’t be my last.

It concerns a gullible square named Jackson who’s been had by some no good swindlers and a dame. In a half brained frenzy to put things right, he only spirals into deeper and deeper trouble leading him to seek help from his doped up street smart brother Goldy who makes his way by impersonating a nun and selling tickets to heaven.

The book is packed with wild, intriguing characters like Goldy ( including two hard ass cops named Grave Digger and Coffin Ed) but Harlem itself plays the biggest role.

Vivid and taut, this book is both gruesome and absurdly funny. While reading, I kept thinking what a great movie it would make and was surprised to learn there already is one from the early 90’s starring Forrest Whittaker. It’s said to be pretty good so I look forward to watching it.

PS – the book as also released under the name For Love of Imabelle and I’d love to get my hands on those photo cover Panther editions!

Recipes »Sweet Pea Ravioli with Scallion Cream Sauce

20111013-053245.jpgfrom Big Girls Small Kitchen

I was in search of a nice, easy sauce to accompany some sweet pea raviolis from the Ravioli Store (via Fresh Direct). I came across this great Scallion Cream Sauce at Big Girls Small Kitchen and knew, as a scallion fan, it would be perfect.

The recipe also includes quick homemade raviolis if you’re more ambitious than me.

Fresh tasting and simple, this was perfect for an impromptu dinner get together.

Just pair with some wine, meats and cheeses.
