Desserts »Empire Cake Snoballs

112 8th Ave

Homemade Sno Ball? Yes please!

Empire, formerly called Lulu Cakes offers these sweet bombs that are miles away from the strange though familiar childhood pucks.

I was happy to find the cake to be moist and thick and the inner frosting to be sweet and thick (you can share these if your sweet tooth his not up to par).

The Chelsea bakery also makes yelpers go wild with their snack cakes – which are like homemade Twinkies.

Recipes »Three Tea Cup Chicken

from Simply Recipes

I know, I make a lot of these Asian ground chicken recipes. What can I say? It’s my thing.

This Three Tea Cup Chicken is subtle and a little sweet. And if you don’t share my crazy enthusiasm for ground chicken, the original recipe calls for sliced anyway.

Easy, mild and sophisticated.

Desserts »Sweetheart Conversation Hearts

From Sweetheart

Is it just me, or do Conversation Hearts taste better? Once uniformly mute and chalky, now they have distinct and punchy flavors. I am happy with the change even though I was fine with them before too.

The wording, though seems stranger than I remember:

“Reach for It”? “1 on 1”? “Race Me”?

What happened to I Love You and Hug Me?

Oh, and forget all my praise if you have a total reasonable aversion to artificial flavoring.

Happy Valentines Evening!

TV Shows »Supersizers Go

On The Cooking Channel

If your passionate about history and food look no further than Supersizers Go for a fun serving of both.

Brits Giles Coren and Sue Perkins, a food writer and comedian take on a different era each episode taking on the customs, dress and most importantly food of the time most often from the richest society.

They recreate actual menus from recipe and historical books.

By the end of the week they compare their overall health.

It’s fascinating to see how people used to eat and this is a great companion to the new York Public Library What’s on the Menu project.

What’s on the Menu is a project from the New York Public Library to transcribe vintage menus for prosperity.
They have over 40,000 menus from the 1840?s on and you, yes you, can help by transcribing dishes in your spare time all while discovering dishes like Consomme Madrilene Frappee and Cream Fritters Au Sabayon.

The menu covers are also great to browse.

Restaurants »Lan Sheng

60 W 39th St

I had my first encounter with true Szechuan “mala” with the Dan Dan noodles at Lan Sheng. Your mouth numbs with a slightly citrus flavor that’s hard to explain

Poor Shaun thought maybe he was having an allergic reaction, which is not a crazy assumption since it’s such a new sensation if you’re not used to it. I’m just giddy that there are still food experiences out there and ones with physical reactions.

Oh and the noodles were delicious besides. I adore Dan Dan noodles. But obviously have never had them quite like these. Appetizer wise, Lan Sheng also boasts yummy mini crab soup dumplings which are worth the wait. My favorite main course had to go to the shredded chicken in spicy garlic sauce. It may sounds hum drum but it was seriously addicting, in fact, I want a dish of if right now!

Spicy in a wholly different way is the flavorful lamb cumin which is not for the faint of heart. Be sure to have rice to mellow the heat. We also split the DIY pork buns which were tasty but filling after so much Szechuan indulgence. It has a special name I’ve forgotten but you can find it in the novel of a menu easily thanks to their handy photos.

The place is laid back and clean, the is service efficient and friendly. A perfect spot to eat after seeing the Weegee exhibit at ICP. I’ll definitely go back next time I’m in the area.

Spend a Couple Hours »Weegee: Murder Is My Business

at The ICP Museum, 1133 Ave of the Americas

I’ve been looking forward to the ICP Weegee show Murder is My Business for months and it didn’t disappoint.

The larger than life tabloid photographer, never squeamish, brought the bloody and violent truth of NYC crime to the front page with shots of recently killed gangsters (and innocents), taken sometimes before the police even arrived (his nickname came from the Ouija board because people joked he used it’s powers to know about crimes.)

His images, though gruesome, are rarely without a sense of humor though. He not only took photos of the gorey, but often captured he way New Yorkers accepted the violence around them, often convening around crime scenes with smiles on their faces.

His Coney Island images, reversely, always have an element of creepiness among the smiles and summer fun.

ICP has added a couple neat components to the show including a replica of his room and an interactive station that shows Weegee’s images next to the current locations in NYC. It’s hard to imagine people being shot in broad daylight on the steps of the chic stores in Soho and Little Italy.

Fans will be thrilled, but the salacious material should gather new fans too. Don’t forget the gift shop – I always like to get a little something from the best shows I see and they have mugs, totes, pins, and posters.

Style Icons: Female »Whitney

RIP

Oh, this was such sad news.

Whitney Houston‘s life was certainly troubled, but I think everyone was still shocked to hear of the iconic singer’s passing.

Like many girls my age, I was mesmerized by her paint splattered How Will I Know and sang the Greatest Love of All in school pageants.

I also have to say that even in her crazier times, she still had a spark that was hard to not love.

Books »City Primeval

By Elmore Leonard (1980)

It’s always a good idea to pepper your reading list with a few Elmore Leonard novels. His snappy crime sagas are always entertaining, always satisfying.

In City Primeval, he takes us to Detroit, where handsome detective Raymond Cruz is on the trail of the seriously dangerous “Oklahoma Wildman” Clement Mansell. Cruz suspects Mansell is responsible for a random double killing and is determined to get justice after Mansell walked away from an air tight murder case based on a technicality. He’s not afraid to go beyond the law to see him pay either.

Throw in a larger than life and corrupt judge, a sexy lawyer, and a bunch of really angry Albanians and you get the kind of thriller we know to expect from Leonard. It’s smart, it’s tense, it’s funny, it’s a perfect quick read.

Desserts »Molly’s Cupcakes

228 Bleecker St

If you know me, you know I love birthday cake. And as it’s my birthday week, Jim brought home a birthday cake cupcake from Molly’s Cupcakes.

I know the city’s over run with cupcakes, but Molly’s French buttercream – that balances sugary and buttery to perfection and amazingly moist cake is note worthy.

It’s a welcome change to the oft copied Magnolia staple of overly sugary frosting or any cupcake you shell out four bucks for only to find a stale cake under the frosting.

I dare say, this Cake Batter cupcake could be the best cupcake in Manhattan. It takes what is so good about boxed cakes – the moistness, the familiar buttery taste but elevates it with the freshness that only comes with goodies made from scratch.

Jim had a pumpkin spice that was equally moist and yummy, just not as suited to my taste.

Interestingly, Molly is not the chef, but the chef’s beloved third grade teacher. A portion of all their profits go to local schools and if it means anything to you, they won a Cupcake War too.
