Hunks »Richard Dawson

Game Show Royalty

My sister and I were major Family Feud watchers growing up. Later I became inthralled with the bacchanalian Match Game. Both had one dashing, kiss-happy man in common – the recently passed Richard Dawson. Very sad news.

Recipes »Spicy Cucumber Gazpacho

from Luna Cafe

Cucumber is the kind of refreshing food that I don’t have to feel bad about craving during my pregnancy. As the weather gets hot, I’ve been envisioning it in every and any form.

A recent gazpacho from Calyer inspired me to make some myself.

I found this easy recipe.

It wasn’t a hit with the whole family – Jim found it a bit overwhelming in taste (there’s lots of garlic) but I really loved this and it’s just right for summer time.

I omitted the jalapeños so I could share with Van, but I’m sure a spicy kick would be a great addition.

Songs »I Go To Pieces

by Peter and Gordon (1965)

There’s something so day dreamy about sad British invasion ballads. In some way, they meld together in a golden oldie station haze but when you stop to listen to one, like the Peter and Gordon hit I Go To Pieces, it’s easy to feel like teen nursing a broken heart (in a good way).

Desserts »The Pie Lady and Son

at The McGolrick Farmer’s Market

We missed Smorgasburg this week, but the McGolrick Park Farmer’s Market began this morning and I am bringing you some of the best bites. Let’s begin with pie – pie, pie, delicious pie.

The Pie Lady and Son offers several fresh baked varieties and in different sizes – a five incher works perfectly for two very hungry or four regular people.

While chocolate fudge pie sounded intriguing, the summer weather begged for cherry. It is sweet, a touch tart, and the walnut crumble is an excellent companion to vanilla ice cream. So yummy, such summery perfection.

And honestly, the proprietor, who really makes pie with his mother out of Nyack, is such a sweetheart, you’s be inclined to buy anything from him – lucky for us it’s fabulous pie.

Restaurants »Orwashers Bread and The Amazing Real Live Food Company Camembert

at The McGolrick Farmer’s Market

The second and third great bites from the McGolrick Farmer’s Market come from Orwasher’s Bread and Ronnybrook Farms.

The Amazing Real Live Food Company boasts an incredible gooey, mild but flavorful camembert, all it needed was some bread…

Enter Orwasher’s amazing sour dough – a loaf which is truly excellent. As a fan of sourdough, I have rarely found any as good as this.

Together – they make a delectable treat that is hard to stop gorging on.

Places to Visit »Magic Forest

Us Route 9  Lake George, NY

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Magic Forest is a magical place. Now that we have a baby to take – even more so.

A creepy awesome place that’s a must on any Lake George visit.

Desserts »Ovenly

31 Greenpoint Ave

Ovenly has been selling their baked goods around town at various locations for some time now but only just opened their own brick and mortar.

I was thrilled to find it open early (at 7) making it a viable option for getting a yummy breakfast treat when Van awakes.

The variety of breads, muffins and scones – some right out of the oven – is impressive and features inteeguing flavors like mustard cheddar (scones), jelly donut (muffins) and espresso cookies.

We tried to two former as well as a chocolate banana muffin and loved them all.

It’s a simple, airy space slightly off the beaten path with only one fault – no iced coffees to wash it all down.

So happy they’ve opened and plan on making then part of a new morning ritual.

Songs »Rains of Castamere

by The National (2012)

Being away I just got caught up with the “Blackwater” episode of Game of Thrones and what an episode it was! A modern take on the Rains of Castemere was a perfect song to end such epic awesomeness. And now I can say I’ve heard The National.
