This is the only time you'll see Dom Deluise on top of Joan Crawford….
I assume.
After just wrapping a film called Trog which she costarred with a caveman, Crawford was still not going down like a faded star. She graced New York's sidewalk with her bigger than life signature – as you can see, she almost ran out of room for her last name in a rush of self important flair.
It was owner Howard Otway who decided to throw and old fashioned premiere opening with sidewalk signatures (Joan Blondell, Gloria Swanson, and Kitty Carlisle are also featured) when he bought the building and made it a revival theater that featured double bills of classic Hollywood films and served brownies.
Here's a great photo of the grand dame herself in the act – you can almost hear her guffaw and growl.
The sidewalks were almost destroyed in 1999 when the Department of Buildings thought someone could trip on them.
But what do you think?
