Places to Visit »Mystic

mystic ctThere are two major destinations in Mystic, CT, the Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Marine Life Aquarium. The seaport boasts a number of “tall” ships dating back to the whaling era, if you've ever read Moby Dick, you are familiar with the Pequod and you will feel right at home.

The aquarium is just as much fun with the new penguin exhibit and the always awesome jellyfish. Try to go on a week day and hopefully you will catch a second grade class trip. Grab a great dinner at the the Daniel Packard Inn.

Places to Visit »Bremen and Niedersachsen Wadden Sea National Park

bremen germany(Periodically I will be using the traveling experiences of my friends, to give a more varied and interesting collection of places to visit).

Shaun visited the harbor city of Bremen over nine years ago, but it and the adjacent beach left a lasting memory (despite the many beers consumed).

The town itself is architecturally amazing with its opulent town hall and the famous Town Musian statue honoring the Brothers Grimm. The park is home to many animals, including seals and the unusual lugworm.

Places to Visit »City Island

city islandAn unexpected little slice of New England in the Bronx (of all places). City Island's residential streets boast adorable homes in various styles including American Craftsman and Colonial Revival with great sea views. There are plenty of antique shops for your browsing pleasure, but not nearly as many as there are seafood restaurants.

For the best deal I have to recommend the Original Crab Shanty, one of the oldest island establishments that has a special of a 1 1/8lb. lobster, two clams, a large shrimp, soup or salad, and a side of linguini. Although none of the meal, sides especially, made the shanty stand out compared to your average seafood joint, the price of 14.95 for all of it sure did.

Places to Visit »Griffiths Observatory

griffiths observatoryThe Griffiths Observatory landmark was made more famous by the ultimate teen angst high school film, Rebel Without a Cause. A great location with a view of the city of angels that is as beautiful as the films' stars.

Once you are done admiring the view, step inside to see the Foucault Pendulum and the planetarium theater where you can attend the public planetarium show and get some education on the stars.

After undergoing extensive renovations, it should open again late this fall.

Places to Visit »Robert Moses State Park

robert moses state parkI would have been satisfied with our trip to Robert Moses State Park if it had ended just over crossing the awesome Robert Moses Causeways where the view of the ocean on both sides is magnificent.

Fortunately for me it did not end there, we enjoyed a perfect weather morning walking at (by far) my favorite beach in the area. It's very clean, the crowds are friendly, the sand is soft, and the hot dogs are tasty. Very highly recommended!

Places to Visit »Garden of the Gods

garden of the godsA site truly worthy of its name, I was not surprised to find several of my old classmates had gotten married here. With stunning rock formations in vibrant colors, Garden of the Gods is a definite must-see if you are in Colorado.

I was disappointed to miss out on a visit myself due to bad weather last weekend.

Places to Visit »Tarrytown

tarrytown new yorkTarrytown, NY is the quintessential quaint, but not hicky, New York Village. An easy drive from the city into another world, a world where it really seems like everyone knows everyone else and people even say hello on the streets (they also obey traffic lights and aren't used to pushy pedestrians like NYC drivers–seriously, I almost got hit by a car).

You can spend the better part of the day in Tarrytown starting with a fantastic meal at Lefteris, one of, if not the, best Greek restaurant I have ever been to followed by some ice cream down the street at Main Street Sweets which has a pumpkin ice cream in the fall that I have heard tell is the best thing on earth.

After you are fully stuffed, you can walk it off at the many second hand, antique, and finer vintage furniture shops. Astrid picked some beautiful rings up at a huge bargain.

Whether you are stopping along the way to the many nearby sites, including former Brix pick, next door's Sleepy Hollow cemetery, or just taking a break, Tarrytown is a pleasant visit.

Places to Visit »Stonehenge

stonehengeI have never been to Stonehenge, but Jim has and he says it's pretty awesome even though it was closed when he went and there are fences everywhere around it.

Even though it was constructed 5,000 years ago, way before the Middle Ages, it embodies the fantastic and magical spirit of the Ren Faire.

Places to Visit »Oyster Bay

oyster bar long islandOyster Bay is a ritzy and pretty northshore town in Long Island that Jim and I have been taking day trips to every summer for a few years now.

We always stop at Oyster Bay Fish & Clam (on Rt 106) and eat amazing lobster rolls, oysters, and steamer clams served by local teen girls bored at their summer jobs.

With its location close to beaches, parks, Ikea, and The Planting Fields Arboretum, Oyster Bay is a perfect first or second stop on your weekend journeys.

Places to Visit »Connetquot State Park

connetquot state parkAbout 35 minutes in on Long Island, Connetquot State Park is a large and secluded park and perfect for an early hike. The trails are flat and therefore relatively easy, but the sand is loose for horses, so there is some added exercise to walk on it.

At the entrance stand three absolutely gorgeous art and craft style buildings and a long serene pond with swans and geese. The trails vary in length from 2 miles to over eight. They have a trout hatchery which looks cool from the brochure, but to be honest we missed to turn off to it twice and had walked several hours and didn't feel like trying a third time.

Overall a lovely, peaceful place where you are unlikely to see more people than geese.
