The short story that the much talked about (and very good) 2005 Ang Lee film was based. With her gentle and simple prose, she made me ache for these lovers and by the end of the scant 80 or so pages, I was crying. I dare anyone not to be as affected by this expertly crafted story that encourages tolerance and empathy.
It was originally published in The New Yorker, to Proulx's surprise (she didn't think it would be published at all) and is also featured in the short story collection Close Range – Wyoming Stories.
This is a classic love story and possibly the most romantic book I have ever read. Whether you have seen the movie or not, I urge you to read this heartbreaking and touching story.
But what do you think?
