Albums »Come Away With ESG

by ESG (1983)

First awesome Spotify discovery! I don’t know why, but since I found Come Away with ESG on a pitchfork list I expected it to be inaccessible. Instead it’s incredibly fun and infectious. I can’t imagine anyone not being driven to dance and smile by these snazzy tracks.

If you had told me ESG was some new darling of the moment I’d believe it because the sound is timeless and refreshing but they are old school 80’s Bronx mixing hip hop, dance, disco, punk and everything else fun. You like fun, right?

They look like fun, real ladies that you share the subway with too. Standing for emerald, sapphire and gold ESG consisted of four cool sisters who, without much credit added a new sound to the scene.

Fun stuff. How come no one told me about them before?

Laughs »Livin the Life

by A. Samuels

I remember many years ago having a discussion about how unintentionally “bad” things (think Ed Wood) had gone the way of the dinosaur with media having become so overproduced by committee and only concerned with profits, with unusual voices being silenced by businesses that found no need for them…

and then the internet exploded with opportunity for amateur talents.

Anyone can have a dream and make it happen, so long as that dream is limited to becoming a viral video.

Just take A. Samuels, a 55 year old casino executive who wants to be a rapper.

Songs »Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell

by Das Racist & Wallpaper (2008)

Once you’ve heard Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, there’s no way you could drive or walk by one without the song playing in your head. It’s such an absurdly catchy tune too, that you might find yourself walking by the local Pizza Hut Taco Bell a lot just to be reminded of it. Love that Das Racist brings humor to the often overly serious genre of hip hop. We love the Wallpaper remix.

Songs »Planet Rock

by Afrika Bambaataa (1982)

Do surprise mystery songs ever show up on your ipod? Ones you know you never downloaded but suddenly appear in a shuffle? Some are frustrating, boring emo rock or some sort of Pavement song from Jim, but Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa is one of the most delightful for me. The summer’s road trips have been that much more fun with the Kraftwerk sampled 80’s techno gem.

Songs »Buffalo Gals

by Malcolm McLaren (1983)

Malcolm McLaren, punk pioneer and provocateur, passed away this week at the age of 64. Let us all remember his hit single, Buffalo Gals, which (ever on the cuting edge) introduced American hip hop’s art of scratching to the UK. Only McLaren would think to combine hip hop and square dance chanting.

Songs »Pants on the Ground

american-idol-larry-platt-pants-on-the-ground-by General Larry Platt (2010)

I don’t watch American Idol, I don’t listen to top 40 radio and, quite frankly, I’m kind of obnoxiously snide about both. But just the other day the stars aligned while I sat in a car and the remix of this Idol sensation was playing. It’s far more than a mere joke though, at least in my mind. First of all the singer, General Larry Platt is a respected civil rights activist who marched with Martin Luther King Jr, second of all he may just be the next Biz Markie.

Idol might churn out the kind of pop I’m anything but a fan of, but I think Pants on the Ground could be (after who knows how many seasons of ratings domination) the best thing to come out of Simon Cowell’s muzak machine.

Songs »Dirty Girl

dirty girl feltby Felt (2005)

I’m not rap unfriendly exactly, but my list of favorite hip hop songs is not a terribly long one. I love Gravediggaz, Eazy-E and Doctor Octagon with the rest of you, and now I can add Felt, or at least their ode to blue collar working girls, Dirty Girl to the list. Slug and Murs, who make up Felt, are underground rappers which means I’ve never heard of any of their previous collaborations or projects, though I am curious.

The joyfully lustful Dirty Girl is just so fun to listen to and any song that can talk about shopping for the best veggie burgers in town, not knowing how to change your motor oil and the eroticism of hair nets and dripping mascara is aces in my book.
