Songs,Style Icons: Male »Jive Talkin, Robin Gibb

RIP

Disco is really taking a hit. Robin Gibb of the awesomely smooth Bee Gees recently passed away on the heels of disco great Donna Summer.

In tribute I suggest listening to Jive Talkin‘ at least several times. You’ll feel good and feeling good is what The Bee Gees were all about. A pretty great legacy to leave behind: smiling, dancing fans.

Albums »Come Away With ESG

by ESG (1983)

First awesome Spotify discovery! I don’t know why, but since I found Come Away with ESG on a pitchfork list I expected it to be inaccessible. Instead it’s incredibly fun and infectious. I can’t imagine anyone not being driven to dance and smile by these snazzy tracks.

If you had told me ESG was some new darling of the moment I’d believe it because the sound is timeless and refreshing but they are old school 80’s Bronx mixing hip hop, dance, disco, punk and everything else fun. You like fun, right?

They look like fun, real ladies that you share the subway with too. Standing for emerald, sapphire and gold ESG consisted of four cool sisters who, without much credit added a new sound to the scene.

Fun stuff. How come no one told me about them before?

Songs »Reunited

by Peaches and Herb (1979)

Peaches and Herb is a quintessential seventies disco ballad duo who’s hit Reunited is the epitome of modern day “cheesy”. So much so that it’s featured in a commercial where a dad is so lame he dares to sing it.The dad also has power tools, so it’s never registered with me as to what the ad is for but it does put the song in my head and that puts a smile on my face.

By the way Herb’s real name is awesomely Herb Fame and the role of “Peaches” has been performed by different women over the years. Reunited features Linda Greene.

Style Icons: Female »The Ritchie Family

Arabian Nights and African Queens

Headdresses, satin appliqued capes, feathers, gold leather, football pads, teeny bikinis, looking like leather boys and lady like business women – of course The Ritchie Family is my style icon of the week after capturing my attention. The Philadelphia disco queens had several hits off their concept albums in the 70’s, but sadly, I have to admit until now I’d never heard of them.
But better late than never when the song is a yelping disco rendition of Brazil (wonder if Terry Gilliam ever considered it instead for his movie). The song, as you can imagine is this week’s pick of the week in that category. Below/after the jump is a gallery of the fantastic fashions.
