It is nearly impossible to find an original album of Jacques Brel's so with great joy I welcome this collection. His music is hard to describe, somewhat loungy, somewhat Broadway (in fact his songs were made into a long running musical “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris“).
His sometimes wistful, sometimes playful, but always dramatic tunes have influenced and been recorded by a myriad of performers including David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, and Dusty Springfield.
Personally I can listen to Brel for hours and can do just that with these 40 tracks, including the the beautifully mournful Ne Me Quitte Pas.
But what do you think?
