Movies of the week

True Stories

true stories david byrneTrue Stories is one of my first favorite movies. As unconventional as you would expect from Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, this musical comedy starring John Goodman, Swoozie Kurtz, and Spalding Gray will leave you feeling off beat and up beat.

Byrne based his characters on eccentric people he read about in tabloid newspapers and places them in the fictional town of Virgil, Texas during the “Celebration of Specialness”. The result is a truly delightful movie that never hits a wrong note, nor does it resemble any other mainstream “uplifting” film I've seen.

Byrne uses his quirky eye to capture some mundanely beautiful scenes and the Talking Heads provide their ever-wonderful music. A must for anyone interested in experimental narrative film or cult movies.

Songs of the week

You Make Me Feel Like Dancing

leo sayer you make me feel like dancingThere seemed to be a trend in the late seventies where male singers sounded strangely female in disco anthems. You Make Me Feel Like Dancing is certainly one of those, so it's time for all you dudes to pull out your falsettos when you sing along to this effervescent hit. And it will get you singing and dancing just as it's name suggests.

Coincidentally this was performed on this weeks TV pick, the Muppet Show. A huge hit for Leo Sayer in both the UK and US, but I was surprised to find he was not a one hit wonder, he also found earlier success with the equally splendid songs “When I Need You” and “The Show Must Go On“. (The Muppets really really liked him, it seems).

Hunks of the week

Zach Galifianakis

zack galifianakisWhat could make one happier than a bearded man that makes one laugh? Zach Galifianakis is the funniest thing about Dog Bites Man (Up in them Guts) and the funniest thing on The Comedians of Comedy tour (“at what age do you tell a highway it's been adopted?”).

Yet this North Carolinian comedic talent is still not widely known or appreciated as much as he should be. Is it the fact that his name is unpronounceable? Or that his beard is too emasculating to male viewers who can't grow one? Or is it because no man should be both this devilishly handsome and this amazingly funny?

See the glory that is Zack Galifianakis on his 2007 tour. He plays Irving Plaza February 24th and tickets would make a great gift for any fan whose birthday happens to be just around then…

Style Icons: Female of the week

Dolly Parton

dolly partonDolly Parton just makes me happy. I love her voice, her giggle, her hair, I love that she put her name on a Tennessee theme park, Dollywood, and grand marshals the Dolly Parade, also in Pigeon Forge, every year.

I think many of my male friends are surprised to find that almost every girl we know is an adamant Dolly fan. And not in an ironic, ain't it funny she wears tight pink leather pants and has giant breasts way, but because she is a talented, funny (“I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb… and I also know that I'm not blonde”), and an inspiring good person.

She, like Leo Sayer, was a frequent guest on The Muppet Show and that's how I became a young fan way back in the day.

Desserts of the week

Sugar Dudes

sugar dudesThese smiling sweets have become quite an obsession online. I must try one myself from La Delice Pastry Shop (on third and 27th) but I need to prepare for a sugar shock to the system from the looks of the icing and cake insides.

I rarely can recommend something I haven't tried, but when a dessert can make people giddy before they've even taken a bite, who cares what it tastes like. But my guess? Tastes like sugar and butter, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Spend a Couple Hours of the week

Karaoke

karaokeThere are many ways and places to do Karaoke in New York and we've tried many of them. Places like Winnie's, Enids, Arlene's Grocery and Sweet Ups offer a stage, a mic, an audience.. which is way too intimidating for me, so I prefer the private party booths of BINY, and my favorite is the former brothel glitz of a place in Koreatown named Manhattan Ding Dong Dang Karaoke at 32 West 32nd Street (6th floor).

It's kind of hidden and has a sign with a signing frog on it. Big word of warning to those that have never rented a private karaoke room – it will cost you. Especially if you invite anyone and everyone you know because 80% of people do not pay their share and the rest end up wide eyed saying “we owe what?!!”

Avoid such ugliness by renting a small room with people who are prepared to stay the whole night and pay their share, that way you can enjoy a worry-free and fabulous night of fun, fun, fun.

People go crazy in their happiness and you'll find yourself not only belting out hits like “Bump and Grind”; “9 to 5″; “She Bop” and “18 and Life” (all my top picks) but with the aid of the free flowing soju you will belt them like they've never been belted before.

Places to Visit of the week

Disneyland

disneylandMy family would visit my extended family in California often when I was a child and a trip to Disneyland was always, to my glee, on the agenda. I don't care what the French say, it really is a magical place and it firmly set an obsession with animatronics in my mind.

My sister and I would try to be the first to see the top of the Matterhorn on the drive there and the first sighting was tickle-your-toes exciting. The Matterhorn is just one of the memorable and classic rides. Space Mountain was the first big coaster I ever rode on and who can resist smiling when recalling the city lights on the Peter Pan ride; the ghosts sitting next to you at the end of the Haunted Mansion and the drunken antics of the ride that relaunched Johnny Depp as box office gold, Pirates of the Caribbean? Just writing about it makes me want to look into a trip in 2007…

TV Shows of the week

The Muppet Show

the muppet showWho among us did not grow up with the superb The Muppet Show? Jim Henson was a magic maker whose creations help form our childhood memories. There are so many characters to love, but of course Miss Piggy stood out for me as a young tot as well as the Swedish Chef. The entire series was recently released on DVD and the movies, as you probably know, are quite enjoyable as well, even the more recent ones made by Henson's son.

Books of the week

I Like You: Hospitality Under The Influence

i like you by amy sedaris hospitality under the influenceI like you too, Amy. Every outsider's hero has come out with the most outrageous, funny, and oddly sincere “how to” book since, well… nothing, because I Like You: Hospitality Under The Influence is unparalleled. This is one of the few books I can recommend without even owning. I have poured over the pages of friends' copies and laughed out loud.

The book includes some odd but real and possibly real delicious recipes, hilarious tips and pointers: “when you're cooking, don't wear wizard sleeves”; “never have bumpy and lumpy on the same plate”, and her obsession with panty hose is given center stage.

A great gift and a truly special book.

Albums of the week

Electric Warrior

t rex electric warriorA glam rock masterpiece. Electric Warrior is a feel good album about sex and outer space and everything pleasurable in between. There is no need to point out favorite songs because this is one of those rare albums where every single song is good and puts a smile on my face.

The only bummer is that Marc Bolan (and T Rex) didn't live longer to grace us with more, more, more. Perfect for a car bounce, dance and sing along road trip followed, of course by the equally exceptional The Slider.

Joseph Barbera

josef barberaJoseph Barbera, who spent his life bringing joy to people, died at age 95 last week. He and partner William Hanna created over 300 cartoons, among them: Huckleberry Hound, The Flintstones. Yogi Bear, Space Ghost, Scooby-Doo, The Smurfs, Snorks, and The Jetsons.

He will be missed, but his legacy lives on Cartoon Network and, more importantly in the hearts if us kids that used to (and still) watch. I am particularly fond of the Wacky Races.

Restaurants of the week

Clinton St. Baking Co.

clinton st baking companyI had been wanting to go to Clinton St. Baking Co. for months before it finally came together. It was worth the wait. Nothing is better to put a smile on your face than comfort food and anyplace that puts blueberry pancakes with maple butter syrup on the dinner menu knows comfort food.

Other tummy tempting menu offerings are crawdaddy benedict, spicy shrimp with cheese grits, and buttermilk fried chicken which I plan on trying during my next visit.

We were celebrating my new job so we went all out and ordered the huge foaming mug of peppermint schnapps hot cocoa. It nearly put me to sleep in cahoots with the pancakes, but I do recommend it, especially once (if) the weather gets cold.

Also worth mentioning are the biscuits that come out before your meal. Never have I taken such note of the bread selection at a restaurant, they are soft and warm, and just melt in your mouth perfectly when drizzled with butter. I could have eaten a dozen of them if I didn't have pancakes coming my way.

Word on the street is this place is superb for brunch, and I believe it. One day we walked by early on a Sunday and the line almost wrapped around the block.

Drinks of the week

Tang

tang“Baby wants some Tang?” That's how a former boyfriend's friend would offer this refreshing sweet drink on summer afternoons. It sounds pervy now, but I still use the phrase on the rare occasions we have Tang at home.

On those occasions, I feel like I am ten years old and a job and bills are the furthest thing from my mind. It's still sweet and tart, just like you remember it.

Cheshire Smile Cattery

cheshiresmile catteryAny of you that have met my fluffball, giant love bug I-Hop know what joy she and her littler big sister Tiptoe bring to our lives.

I-Hop came from Cheshire Smile Cattery and she's featured on the home page – she's the first kitty on the line up. I highly recommend Marina, the breeder, an awesome Ukrainian veterinarian in Brighton Beach who is kind and helpful. She is also masterful at naming cats, just look at her sire (pictured) “Lion Sky Diamond”.

British shorthairs are a loving, large and healthy breed and Marina's cats are gorgeous and well cared for. She specializes in the unique pointed coloring shorthairs which are hard to find. If you are looking for a kitten, consider Cheshire Smile.
