The Conversation is just a classic great movie. Gene Hackman plays a surveillance expert who gets too involved in a dangerous case. It is possibly one of the best performances by the perennially brilliant actor. But everything else about this tense thinking man's thriller is perfection too.
Francis Ford Coppola made this in between the first and second Godfather films, and for my money it is just as good–if not better. He deals with issues of privacy, intimacy, paranoia, and perception in his complex script with intelligence.
Honestly, if you haven't seen this movie, you haven't seen what these two exceptional men are capable of.
Curious what else you'll find on Brix Picks?

Nobody Does It Better
Thom Yorke once called Carly Simon's Nobody Does It Better “the sexiest song that was ever written” while performing a (very good) live version of this song. I agree, even if it was made for one of the cheesier Bond movies.

Kris Kristofferson
Sometimes an old man is worth a second look. I mean who new Whistler was such a babe (Blade's trusty assistant/father figure for those that don't know).
It helps that Kristofferson sings songs of love with the voice of the divine, and that he swept Ellen Burstyn off her feet in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (previous Brix pick – which, in all seriousness, you need to see ASAP!), and that he has the swagger of a hip cowboy that could teach you a thing or two about loving and probably holding a gun too.
My goodness, he's even pretty hot as the evil rich man in Steven Seagal's Fire Down Below (which I just watched again last night and thoroughly enjoyed –with quotes like “I'm gonna have to educate you in how to properly beat the shit outta somebody,” who wouldn't?)

Claudia Jennings
Now, I am not putting Claudia Jennings on here because she was in Playboy, or just because she became the Queen of the Drive-ins, including Moonshine County Express and Sisters of Death, and I certainly don't find her stylish for her eventual drug addiction and tragic death.
She's made my list because there's something about her that makes me say she's the hottest little thing I ever seen.

Desserts of the week
Sundaes and Cones
Sundaes and Cones serves yummy ice cream in a clean bright environment. Daily flavors change and range from the tame (mint chocolate chip – which was excellent) to the bizarre (wasabi – which is tasty but too much for a whole scoop). And speaking of scoops, their's are big –sure you'rethrowing down 2.75, but it's twice the size of most place's.
I tried the corn flavor and found it pleasantly mild and not too sweet. The mocha chip was good and rich while the melon was sweet and refreshing. I don't think you can go wrong here.

Ikea
Oh those Swedes. It's so nice that a company like Ikea exists with such good design and consumer principles. It's hard to imagine the world before Ikea – ugly furniture, tons of money.
Again: Oh those Swedes! How I love them. Even a trip to the store, crowded with the public, only gets to me after a few hours because speculating about the possibilities for your apartment is too much fun to notice the crowds.
We may possibly be using their services for our new kitchen from demolition to installation, talk to me at the end of the process and I will let you know if I still sing their praises.

Places to Visit of the week
Tarrytown
Tarrytown, NY is the quintessential quaint, but not hicky, New York Village. An easy drive from the city into another world, a world where it really seems like everyone knows everyone else and people even say hello on the streets (they also obey traffic lights and aren't used to pushy pedestrians like NYC drivers–seriously, I almost got hit by a car).
You can spend the better part of the day in Tarrytown starting with a fantastic meal at Lefteris, one of, if not the, best Greek restaurant I have ever been to followed by some ice cream down the street at Main Street Sweets which has a pumpkin ice cream in the fall that I have heard tell is the best thing on earth.
After you are fully stuffed, you can walk it off at the many second hand, antique, and finer vintage furniture shops. Astrid picked some beautiful rings up at a huge bargain.
Whether you are stopping along the way to the many nearby sites, including former Brix pick, next door's Sleepy Hollow cemetery, or just taking a break, Tarrytown is a pleasant visit.

X Files
We've been watching X Files reruns lately and my God! When this show was good it was really, really, really good. Of course, I am not speaking of all the three million parters and I don't even consider Doggett at all, but the one offs about monsters – there is no better tv.
Foxy Mulder is the last word in sarcastic, moody, and quirky funny leading men, and who doesn't love a little Scully skepticism?
My only qualm is that a lot of the best ones are rarely in syndication, I may just have to run out and rent a few to get my fix.

Wild Rice and Ham Quiche
Oh so good! A very flavorful and addicting quiche. The mushrooms, peppers, ham and rice are a unique but perfect combination. I
used half the cheese the recipe calls for and still found it cheesy enough with a lot less calories. Perfect to make on a Sunday and bring as lunch throughout the week.

Books of the week
Sunset and Sawdust
Sunset and Sawdust, a gritty, depression era pulpy country noir is a great quick read. Sunset is a local gal with a brutish husband whom she kills one day and ends up taking over his job as constable. A murder mystery with a homme fatale and other oddball and scary characters unfolds in the dusty vivid landscape of East Texas.
Joe R. Lansdale is a skilled storyteller and this is the best of the two of his books I've read (The Bottoms is the other and it is worth a look too). I will be picking up some more genre bending novels from him in the future.

Kristofferson
A phenomenal album, Kristofferson changed the face of Nashville when it was released. Resembling Leonard Cohen more than Hank Williams, Kristofferson was certainly a new sound for an old genre.
His voice is masculine and straightforward, his songwriting is beguiling and honest. Every song is a good one on this album, but Just the Other Side of Nowhere, Help Me Make It Thru The Night, and Casey's Last Ride are my favorites.

Christian Lacroix
Since Jim and I will have just had our third wedding anniversary as you read this, I thought I would honor the man who designed my wedding dress, the extraordinary Christian Lacroix.
Whether he's epitomizing the eighties with his luxury and decadence, helming Pucci with aplomb, or delivering the always exciting and favorite Lacroix couture and ready to wear lines, he is truly a living legend.
No one can mix prints and fabrics quite like him and I love that he keeps a sense of humor with his clothes. If I were famous and/or rich I'd wear him all the time.

Tuck Shop
This fairly new Aussie restaurant, Tuck Shop, comes with extremely friendly service and mean meat pies and sausage rolls. Try the pale ale Australian beer they carry too.
The menu is not too extensive, but everything we tried was top notch, and more items will be added as they expand. Plus the price is more than all right and you can bring your vegetarian friends too.
A great addition to the neighborhood and a perfect stop before or after a night of drinking.

Drinks of the week
Watermelon Juice
There is this place down the block from work (on 36th between Broadway and 7th) that I always feel so bad for. Almost no one goes there and the few times I have it always seems to be going wrong for them. They will be out of everything, make things wrong, give all your change in Sakagaweea coins, etc…
But the proprietor is such a nice guy that really, really wants to do good, so I am very happy to say that I can finally recommend it for something. That something? The watermelon solo smoothie: nothing but fresh watermelon and ice and it is one of the most refreshing summer drinks you can have–and healthy too! You can make it yourself easily: chop up watermelon, put it in a blender with ice.

International Grocery
This narrow grocery carries one of my most favorite treats ever, the greek cod roe, lemon, olive oil whipped spread – Taramasalta. $2.50 gets you half a pound – which I could eat in one sitting if I had no self control.
There are other goodies in International Grocery, including a pretty amazing looking marinated octopus, several enticing versions of havala, homemade baklava and spinach pies, as well as barrels of exotic spices, grains, and olives.
The service is very friendly, the location convenient if you work in midtown, and the possibilities of culinary experimenting are endless.

Found Photos
Found Photos is really great for anyone who is somewhat voyeuristic and lets face it, who isn't. This site actually does something Jim and I do while writing projects – finds ordinary people's photographs online.
Only instead of using them for inspiration someone's made a website of his findings and there are a lot. Another site you can browse for hours, gathering glimpses of total stranger's lives.
