Movies of the week

The Philadelphia Story

the philadelphia storyThe Philadelphia Story is a terribly witty and charming classic romantic comedy directed by George Cukor has a mass of memorable and clever lines, excellent costume design and saved Katherine Hepburn's career.

She, James Stewart, and Cary Grant, along with everyone else in this film are flawless. This is the kind of movie that they are talking about when they say “they just don't make them like they used to”. I can scarcly imagine a romantic comedy today with dialogue this sparkling … just look at what Ebert had to say of one of our most recent romantic comedies Failure to Launch:

“Oh, what stupid people these are. Stupid to do what they do, say what they say, think what they think, and get bitten by a chipmunk, a dolphin, a lizard and a mockingbird.”

Instead of wating your time in the new release section, pick up this timeless gem. It will not dissapoint.

Songs of the week

The Mariner’s Revenge Song

the decemberists mariner's revengeIt's no secret that I love theatrical music – not musical theater music, and there is a difference, but big storytelling, dramatic music that makes you want to sing along. The Mariner's Revenge Song by The Decemberists is one of those songs.

Essentially a sea shanty, you can imagine listening to this in an old seaside bar, with a traveling troupe singing this wild tale of the mariner and his revenge with serving wenches, spilled tankards of beer and peg legs pounding the floor to the beat.

The instrumental interludes are beautiful and the tone of this shanty ranges from feverish, to melancholy, to downright scary. An exciting tune. What other song is sung “from the belly of a whale”?

Hunks of the week

Trip Fontaine

trip fontaine“The Stone Fox.” “The delight of girls and women alike”, Trip Fontaine is a high school dream perfectly created and realized by Jeffrey Eugenides in his 1993 novel, The Virgin Suicides.

Doing the movie version justice is Josh Harnett, in a role, that sadly, will most likely be his best. Not since Jake Ryan has handsome youth been so irrisitable in it's leather jacket and shaggy bangs.

Style Icons: Female of the week

Diana Ross

diana rossSure, she's a prima donna, sure all of her records have been broken, and sure she's dating Anaconda star and weirdo Jon Voight, but Miss Supreme was a star dammit!

Most importantly she was a star who let the show go on and new what to do with crappy sudden rainstorms like the ones we've been plagued with all summer long. In 1983 she was performing in Central Park when a bastard of a storm broke out. Ross carried on for several minutes in the rain while telling her fans to go home and promising (and fulfilling that promise) to perform the next night free of charge.

So what if she made the promise without permission from the city. I told you she was a prima donna, and the world can tell you she is a star!

Desserts of the week

Olive Oil Coppetta

olive oil coppettaThis is one of those desserts where everyone at the table starts moaning with joy, exclaiming “oh my god” and “this is amazing”.

If you don't know what I am talking about, then you need to get down to Otto and order the Olive Oil Coppetta which is olive oil gelato with basil syrup and sea salt with strawberries and passion fruit granita.

Even a nine dollar price tag couldn't keep me from full on ecstatic enjoyment of this delectable delicacy.

Spend a Couple Hours of the week

A Yankees Game

yankees gameUnfortunately, the game we saw (along with Tom Hanks, who we were prompted to applaud over and over throughut the game), was a bad one for the Yanks. Bad as in abismal. The final score was 19 – 5.

But it was a pleasant day in the shaded nose bleed section where I had one of the best tasting hot dogs of my life and sat completely comfotable with roughly 54,000 of the general public generally drunk.

I really think going to a Yankees game is something you have to do at least once if you live here.

Places to Visit of the week

San Antonio River Walk

san antonio river walkYears ago a friend of mine had her debutante ball in San Antonio. I am forever grateful for the invite, as it was one of the most spectacular events I have ever witnessed. Twenty foot trains on dresses covered in Swarovski crystals. My friends dress was NYC themed and the gown displayed the skyline in glitzy over the top glory.

The day before the big night, we all had dinner aboard a boat that traveled along the San Antonio River Walk, and it was fabulous. I truly recommend that if you are in San Antonio, don't skip out on the experience. The Alamo is great and all, but can you drink a maragrita with the sun on your face and the wind in your hair as people watch you float by at the Alamo? I think not. Remember the Riverwalk!

TV Shows of the week

The Thick of It

the thick of itTo say The Thick of It is like a British Office, only about government might be fairly accurate, but it seems unfair to the creators, espcially Armando Iannucci, whose fabulously waggish show The Day Today feature faux-verite segments that predate the Office and seemed to have been an inspiration for Ricky Gervais.

It may take a couple viewings to get into the show, the accents are thick and the government set up is slightly different from our own, except for the fact that it is crookedly run by people who don't seem to know what they are doing.

I would love to see an American version, perhaps about Albany's mess, but in today's political climate, I will not be holding my breath. A brilliant comedy that deserves a following.

Books of the week

Henry Darger: In the Realms of the Unreal

henry darger realms of the unrealIn the Realms of the Unreal is an absolutely beautiful, massive, difinitive tome of Outsider artist extraordinare Henry Darger. This book does not contain all of Darger's famous opus about the blonde Vivian girls and the battle between their land of Angelinia and the evil land of Glandelinia, but how could it since it is the longest single piece of writing known at around 23,000 pages.

Still, the book is so lovingly put together and so georgeous, you can enjoy it with out reading a single word.

Albums of the week

Joy of a Toy

joy of a toyEccentric is the word most used to describe Ayers, and Joy of a Toy is certainly that; but more than that, it is enchanting and distinctive. Lady Rachel, Girl on a Swing, and Song for Insane Times are stand outs in an overall masterpiece of an album.

In many ways is a very gentle listening experience, the songs almost drift through you, but it hits some very strange and sometimes sinister notes as well. A most satisfying find from a unique vision and voice.

Style Icons: Male of the week

Kevin Ayers

kevin ayersNot only is Ayers my album pick of the week, but he just looks so great in every photo and video I've seen, he's just got to be my style icon too.

He was also a member of The Soft Machine before a solo career that many of his fans complain he did not take seriously enough, often opting to take off for a tropical island anytime fame got too close. That may be why Kevin Ayers is far from a household name, but it sounds pretty fun to me.

He could have easily fit into my hunk category as well with that angelic face.

Restaurants of the week

Otto Enoteca Pizzeria

otto pizzeriaWe had initially decided on Otto Enoteca Pizzeria because it was in the area we were going to be, the menu looked enticing, and the prices were right. When I learned that it was Mario Batali's I had two expectations A. The food will be excellent, B. The atmosphere may not. I was right on both counts.

The food was indeed excellent and more. We all tried the pizza. Mike and I shared two anchovy varieties, one with cheese and chiles, one without cheese but with olives.

Wow, even at high end pizza places I have never had fresh and plump anchovies like these. Jim was brave and ordered the Lardo, a white cheese pizza with ham fat. Believe me, it was scrumptious even if it doen't sound it. A tasty olive appitizer and an enormous wine list rounded out the dining experience. And the dessert was so amazing, I can't even get into it here, you'll have to read my dessert entry.

Now for the atmosphere. It's one of those restaurants that doesn't feel like it's for locals, that favors spectacle over comfort, but at the same time, it could have been much worse. The lighting was dark and flattering, the staff was friendly and efficient, and really, with food this good you forget about where you are in about two minutes.

Drinks of the week

V8

v8 vegetable juiceIsn't it grand when something good for you tastes good too. V8 was the health drink before health drinks and still reigns supreme. Full of vitamins, calcium, and potassium it's unique combo of tomatoes, carrots, beets, celery, parsley, lettuce, watercress, and spinach.

Nothing beats it for an early morning when you were up late the night before. The Spicy Hot is excellent if you like spice, and the Lemon Twist is tastely, but sadly very hard to find.

Help Stop Global Warming

global warmingWhile I have yet to watch the movie An Incovienient Truth, it's message that global warming is happening and only people can stop it is an important one. See what you can do to help at Undoit and Stopglobalwarming.

Some of the basic daily steps are things I had never even thought of, espically associated with global warming, like changing the a/c filter and inflating your tires.

Web Sites of the week

Lipstick.com

lipstick.comWhen I saw the ubiquitous ads for Lipstick.com popping up everywhere, I was not convinced, but I found it's like having a personal assistant to scour the internet to find tid bits of gossip for you.

There are no frills, just headlines, so it only takes you a few minutes to skip the unimportant (Aniston has best legs!) and read the good stuff (A Drunk Tara Reid thought she was working with Robert De Niro).

Laughs of the week

Amy Sedaris

amy sedarisDon't fret. If you missed Amy Sedaris on the Colbert Report, you can watch it here. In fact, watch all the clips.

This is one funny lady. From the brilliance of Strangers With Candy, to the fun photo shoots and interviews, to her cupcakes at Joe. I love her.
