Movies of the week

She’s Gotta Have It

She's Gotta Have ItIn junior high, even when “Do The Right Thing” was blowing my mind and I was all about Spike Lee and his “joints“, this was his movie I never had any interest in seeing.

Today, I've always shied away from its early-indie amateur qualities which I feared might be annoying. While it does have all the staples of the stereotypical independent film, I was surprised to find myself really enjoying this quiet and engaging movie.

A frank, if not somewhat unrealistic, portrait of a woman's, Nola Darling's, sexuality and her relationships with three men. Spike Lee himself plays one of these men, Mars Blackmon, the Daniel Leeb of the movie, a character you may remember from Nike commercials of the late 80s and early 90s.

While this movie lacks the depth and sophistication of Do The Right Thing, this less watched charmer is worth a look.

Songs of the week

Fresh

Fresh by Kool and the Gang In honor of Claydes Charles Smith, who died Friday, I pick my favorite Kool and the Gang song. What an anthem for new girls in town, makes you want to move and start over down the block from the gang (and Kool of course). The lyrics make me swoon:

“I've been thinking about the way you walk/
Baby I like the way you talk/
Tell you something I really can't hide/
Heaven must have sent you to be by my side/
Fresh and lovely like a dream come true/
I'll give anything to spend the night with you/
What a feeling and I can't stop it baby”

Hunks of the week

Marcel Duchamp

Marcel DuchampLooking like a relative of Sherlock Holmes, Duchamp is the hunkiest of the Dadists (even in drag) and ringleader of the movement in New York.

He helped change the way art is viewed and defined. It makes sense that his revolution, carried out with a sense of humor often lacking in the art world, is having an impact on the hostile and complex world of today. You can see a retrospective of the Dadist movement at the MoMa through September 11th.

Also check out other supplementary shows “Daughters of New York Dada” At Francis M. Naumann and Hans Richter At Maya Stendhal.

Style Icons: Female of the week

Astrud Gilberto

Astrud GilbertoEven though I find the urban legend more romantic, Miss Gilberto wants the record put straight: “I'd like to emphasize to those of you who have read the distorted version that I was “just a housewife until Stan Getz or Creed Taylor 'discovered' me”, that although I had not yet performed “for hire”, I've had already some experience as a vocalist stemming from the few years that I had been singing at gatherings with this clan of musicians.”

With that out of the way, complete Cinderella story or not, this Bossa Nova legend with one of the most sultry and soothing voices of all time also sports one of the most adorable goofy smiles and a lovely sense of style. She also is one strange digital artist.

Desserts of the week

Friendly’s Wattamelon Roll

Friendly's Wattamelon RollSomehow I got through my whole childhood without ever having a Friendly's Wattamelon Roll.

Well, thanks to my dear friends and a weekend at the beach, I will NOT get through my whole adult life without it too.

Made of mild, some might say bland, sherbet and chocolate chips, the joy of a Wattamelon comes more from the spectacle than the taste, because, you know, it looks like a watermelon!

Stories for the Wobbly Hearted

Daniel KitsonNow, I have to admit that I haven't seen this show yet, nor had I even heard of Daniel Kitson until I bought tickets. Therefore, I can't really recommend this yet, but the show has such a limited run I wanted to give a heads up.

From the pleas of Eugene Mirman and Demetri Martin on myspace, the TimeOut review, and the NY Theater review, it sounds like something I certainly did not want to miss out on. Ask me in a week how excellent it was.

Places to Visit of the week

Sistine Chapel

Sistine Chapel As impressive as it is gaudy, especially after the restoration (which was quite controversial), it's really something to behold, and a must see if you are in Rome.

The chapel Features frescos by not only Michelangelo, but Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Rossellini, and Signorelli as well. Truly more spectacular in person than photos could ever convey.

TV Shows of the week

Pants Off Dance Off

Dance Off Pants OffCalled the dumbest TV show ever, and rightfully so. People (strangelyn mostly from my borough of Brooklyn) strip–to undies only–in front of their favorite music video for money.

The real charm (yes, I said charm) of the show comes from the cable access cheapness, no lame obviously written scripts, the things these people say are too inane to make it past script supervisor one.

All the dancers can be seen on their website as well. Look for “Lily”, I am not sure if she's a man or a woman, but she's the best dancer I've seen so far. It also boasts the laziest teleprompter reader of a host, but even she adds to the spirit of the show.

Books of the week

Intensity

Intensity by Dean KoontzSo it's not high literature–well, actually it is, in comparison to the other Koontz novel I've read (I swear, it's about a genius dog and and dog made of pure evil and it sah-ucks)–but it's summer, dude, relax.

Intensity is a wet dream for women who watch and read about true crime; coming up with ways they themselves would escape from maniacs and the like. And yes, I am one of those women. Sure, it's a bit contrived and it's been done before, but parts are actually “intense” as the title and weird but pretty cool cover art would have you to believe.

I also remember seeing an entertaining TV movie adaptation years ago, but it's not readily available.

Albums of the week

Rubber Factory

The Black Keys - Rubber FactoryI love the Black Keys, they are one of the few newer bands I know and love well and. if you like good blues rock (not Stevie Ray Vaughn), you will love them too.

People might say they are too derivative, sounding like echoes of Led Zeppelin and Muddy Waters among others. But so what if those people are right? It's great dark and dirty bar, beer drinking, world-weary heart aching, thumping, classic blues rock.

Plus this album features an amazing cover of Captain Beefheart's cover of the Robert Pete Williams's song “Grown So Ugly“.

Style Icons: Male of the week

The Kurgan

KurganI want it made clear that I do not endorse tossing children in pits with hungry dogs to fight for meat or any of the evil things The Kurgan (whose race, the Kurgans, really existed) generally stands for, but you must admit he is the coolest thing about Highlander and he certainly has a style.

From bone armor to asymmetrical punk rock, he always looked like the ultimate bad ass of his time. By the way, not only is Clancy Brown awesome, so is Highlander's editing and cinematography. So much done with so little with no thanks to Sean Connery.

Restaurants of the week

Ali Baba

Ali Baba So midtown may not be the coolest place to hang out after work, but for a restaurant this deeelicious, braving the garmentos and the noisy streets is more than worth it.

I'm a huge fan of Turkish food and this is some of the best I have ever had. Plus, as an appetizer they have is one of my favorite things on earth: tarama, a spread made with cod roe, olive oil, and lemon juice.

Don't expect to stay within reasonable calorie intake here, the food is filling and intense and, although I'm sure there are some healthier options on the extensive menu, no one at my table partook in them.

Ali Baba also boasts a reallyfriendly staff that even sat us without our entire party being present. A real find.

Drinks of the week

Long Island Ice Tea

Long Island Iced TeaLike a VH1 Divas Live performance resulting in the most beautiful music known to man, LIIT mixes together all the hard stuff that is difficult to stomach on its own but, with a little bit of coke, the flavors cancel each other out and you end up with a highly drinkable (and therefore dangerous concoction).

Of course, life is not like the cocktails we drink and we all know too many divas do no one any good (think of Lady Maramalaaaaaaaaade!). If you dare to have more than a couple of these potent beverages, you'll wake up thinking too many LIITs do no one any good either.

Be Kind

KindnessWith New York Magazine devoted to etiquette and a new report that says New York is the most polite city in the world, let's prove it. Because I'm still not convinced.

Case in point, I saw a 7 month pregnant woman on the subway and no one would give up their seat. One guy was actually reading a book about money, just to drive home the fact that he was an asshole. The woman told us that 80% of the time no one will give her their seat and when they do she is so overwhelmed that she wants to send them flowers.

So why not do something kind? Wouldn't it be nice to make someone happy enough that they'd like to send you flowers?

Web Sites of the week

New York City Walk

NYC WalkBetween 2002 and 2005, Caleb Smith walked down every street in Manhattan. This website chronicles the simple but impressive journey.

My only complaint is that I want more–more pictures, more info, more everything. A wonderful tribute to an amazing city where every corner holds something new and exciting.

Laughs of the week

The Oozinator

OozinatorSurely at some point in the conception, drawing, planning, presentation, design, making, testing, or marketing of this toy, surely someone must have noticed and pointed out that The Oozinator looks like a huge alien cock that ejaculates on young boys. Right?
