Picks for the week of May 29th, 2006

Movies of the week

Night of the Comet

Night of the CometThis week is all about being “upbeat” – so why is my movie pick about a comet that wipes out most of the human race? Because of a rare and
well balanced mix of humor, sci-fi and drama that was perfected in the 80s (think American Werewolf in London, Ghostbusters, and The Stuff) but clearly forgotten.

I only wish blockbusters today had as much going for them as this low budget classic, which now available on DVD! There were rumors that the original print of Comet was lost but online petitions demanding its release anyway. When you feel low this movie puts a smile on your face – true – the plot has the world ending as we know it, but for the protagonists it's a best case scenario – loved ones are safe, a guy you'd totally ball has also survived, and you can take anything you want from the mall.

Make sure to keep an eye out for former Brix Pick style icon Mary Woronov in the weird evil scientist sub plot. This is a true gem that more people should see.

Songs of the week

Rip It Up

Orange Juice Rip It UpThis is one invigorating, pop, punk, new wave, one hit, fun song. Orange Juice was the biggest thing at the time in Scotland and no wonder. Wouldn't you love to party with baby face Edwyn Collins or goof off on the streets wearing crazy outfits like they do in their video?

Despite the clearly eighties vibe, Rip It Up actually sounds quite contemporary – were they ahead of their time or are new bands just mining the past?

Hunks of the week

Tygra

TygraWhat?! He's hot. And just read his bio:

“Without Tygra there would be no Cat's Lair. Under his guidance the Robear Berbils constructed Cat's Lair in only three days. Tygra's flaming/exploding bolo-whip is a formidable weapon. With it Tygra can become invisible to almost any Third Earth being. Tygra's agility and cunning help him in times of battle and make him an invaluable asset to the team.” – from The Ultimate Thundercats Webpage

Style Icons: Female of the week

Cyndi Lauper

Cyndi LauperI doubt I'm the only one who knows they wouldn't have ended up half as cool if it weren't for Cyndi Lauper. Not only did she have a fun fashion sense that was unlike anyone else's, she had a witty and spirited personality, not to mention great interests like wrestling, vintage clothes and masturbation.

I dressed as a punk rocker from kindergarten to fifth grade and owned florescent lace fingerless gloves and only dreamed of the day I could dye my hair crazy colors – all because of her. Maybe I'm just an old lady but it seems like there are fewer and fewer cool women to look up to in popular culture these days. I just don't think Pink is comparable to the pop goddess who told us that the Goonies were good enough.

Desserts of the week

Pims

Pims These soft biscuits with fruit jam and a hard chocolate topper are the perfect little dessert to share a cup of tea with. Raspberry is my favorite flavor, but they come in several tempting options.

Spend a Couple Hours of the week

Bowling

BowlingI had not gone bowling for years until recently. While the lack of practice definitely showed – my first score was 28, I did improve with the help of pointers from my friends and we all had a wonderful time. The particular alley we went to was having cosmic disco bowling when we started – and I preferred that to the normal lighting – mostly because you realize just how dank and strange a bowling alley is with the bright florescents.

Of course dank and strange is part of the fun. So are a few lucky drinks to help your game. our fun night was up in Lake George. Here are bowling options in and around the city that I have not tried — Bowlmor Lanes, Chelsea Piers, Leisure Time Bowl, in Brooklyn, and more.

Places to Visit of the week

Prairie Dog Town

Prairie Dog Town This road side attraction in Oakley can be dangerous – seriously my sister sprained her ankle in a prairie dog hole – but that shouldn't stop you from making a visit next time you happen to be traveling on Highway 83.

There is something distinctly Texas Chainsaw Massacre about the place, from the stuffed jackalopes and live rattle snakes in the “museum” hallway that reeks of dust and death, to the absolute chaos of the out door prairie dog town petting zoo – where the little animals are everywhere, peeking from behind the cows with two legs growing out of their behinds. The cows are real, so are the legs and in general their piercing gaze as you gawk at them gives you a feeling somewhere in between the willies and cold dark fear. Bring the kids too.

TV Shows of the week

Sharpe’s Rifles

Sharpe's RiflesIf you love adventure and/or Sean Bean you must watch. This is an enjoyable epic about Richard Sharpe and his sharp shooting men during the Napoleonic era in Europe.

Based on the novels by Bernard Cornwell that old guys and old guys only read – this is far more entertaining and accessible to the young and not guys than I thought. Full of intrigue and even romance, this is a great companion to the incredible (and previous Bricks Pick) Horatio Hornblower. Give it a chance.

Recipes of the week

Chicken Curry

Chicken CurryWhile this version is not quite as rich and flavorful as you might find in a restaurant – it is yummy. Great with couscous. Be careful if you have a sensitive tummy.

Books of the week

Nothing Burns in Hell

Nothing Burns in HellFarmer is famous for his groundbreaking sci-fi work, but Nothing Burns is pure pulp brilliance. He takes traditional noir with its witty and gruff dialogue, but adds a unique touch to the genre – a ninety two year old femme fatale, mutant hicks, a nagging wiccan wife, etc.

A very humorous but still fairly violent mystery that takes place in Peoria, Illinois. A quick and satisfying read. My only complaint is that this never turned into a series.

Albums of the week

If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears

The Mamas and the PapasThis debut album must have sounded so fresh, new and exciting when it was released. To this day there is still nothing quite as refreshing with harmonies near as beautiful. Some spectacular songs for summer including the ubiquitous hit “California Dreaming“. Some equally good but never played on the radio songs are “Somebody Groovy“, “Got A Feelin'” and “I Call Your Name“.
|
This album was made as all the drama that made their Behind the Music so intriguing was starting. The MamasCass and Michelle Phillips are also two of the coolest ladies in music. Well, Cass was cool anyways, Phillips was just kind of a beautiful but loose heartbreaker.

Style Icons: Male of the week

Wes Anderson

Wes AndersonLove, love, LOVE the corduroy suits. They can even make me forget that I hated Life Aquatic. But hey, everyone has their missteps. I also find a good sense of humour important in a style icon, and Anderson clearly has one (see laugh of the week). And besides, I'm pretty sure Anderson is a “hipster” and you know my feelings about “hipsters” – I like them. So there.

I should also mention he dons a scarf nearly all the time and you know my feelings about scarves, pretty much the same as my feelings about “hipsters“.

Restaurants of the week

DB Bistro Moderne

DB Bistro ModerneHome of the $30 burger … and yes it is worth it. Imagine all the other crap you could spend thirty dollars on. A Nascar baby cover up for example, or maybe some Joyful Elephant Tapas Forks. Isn't a juicy, perfecty pink surloin burger wrapped around braised shortribs with foie gras and truffles a much more reasonable purchase. A Leffe Blonde was the perfect accompaniment.

If you are either a food snob or a burger lover this is essential to try. The restaurant is not as bad as it could be for a midtown tourist “upscale” establishment. The staff was friendly and decor was not too 90's riche.

Drinks of the week

Sweet Hoe

Sweet HoeThe sweet hoe is a wonderful concoction that I was introduced to at the bar below our apartment – Mugs Ale House. One part Raspberry Framboise and two parts Hoegaarden, this is a refreshing and sweet alternative to straight beer. We recently made our own with currant flavored framboise and Heifeweiss and it was equally good. Perfect as spring slowly begins into summer.

Stop and Smell the Daffodil Project

Daffodil Project Stop and smell the flowers – if you do you may have noticed many yellow tulips and daffodils in the city lately, There is a reason – The Daffodil Project – started in 2001 by Hans van Waardenburg of B&K Bulbs in the Netherlands and Lynden B.Miller of NYC – van Waardenburg donated over half a million bulbs and raised over a million more for our city while Miller organized over 20,000 volunteers to do the planting. as the results begin to bloom this season – truly stop to appreciate a memorial of simplicity and beauty that is not a mess of money and egos.

Web Sites of the week

Tick Tock Toys

Tick Tock Toys Lots and lots and lots of images of food packaging, snapshots, comics, and other memorabilia from the past – from the extremely weird to the down right adorable. Any fan of retro or camp should take a look. There is certainly plenty to see. This site comes to us from Dan Goodsell who has put out a good looking book with Taschen.

Laughs of the week

Wes Anderson’s

Wes Anderson Am ExWinning and funny, this spot outshines Shamalongagingdong's in every way.

Oh, and some people may be wondering why Axl Rose's fist fight with Tommy Hilfiger does not appear here this week – well,
I'll tell you why – it is just too sad. Axl came out of retirement to play at Rosario Fucking Dawson's birthday party?! Ugh.
