Picks for the week of March 13th, 2006

Movies of the week

Careful

Careful If you are not familiar with Guy Maddin, you are in for an especially surprising and unique experience. Inspired in look and theme by the silent “Mountain Films” of Leni Riefenstahl, Careful tells the tale of an alpine village called Tolzbad where everyone must whisper to prevent an avalanche.

Hyper stylized and dream like, each frame is intriguing and stimulating. As a word of warning, Careful is also strangely distant emotionally and has a very lulling score, I have seen this lead to drowsiness if you are watching too late at night (and your dreams are bound to be wild the with story lines of incest, repression and fear that permeate this movie). Take a look at this uncomparable masterpiece yourself.

Songs of the week

Lexicon Devil

Lexicon Devil - The Germs Having died of an intentional drug over dose (under a sign that read “Here Lies Darby Crash”), Crash's Germs have only one album which was release posthumously. Lexicon Devil is my favorite of the few Germs songs. If you've ever seen The Decline of Western Civilization, you know the raw, insane, and wildly charming antics of Crash and can morn the upcoming movie starring some dude from “Boy Meets World” and Dracula 2000.

Hunks of the week

Nicolas Ghesqui?re

Nicolas Ghesquiere Hunk, or style icon? My head was spinning with the question all week. Sure as the creator of one of the most stand out collections of the season, he is a style icon. But he has that beautiful face, and has said he find inspiration in Princess Leia, so that places him squarely in the hunk category as well. So technically he is this weeks' hunk, but really he is every category he fits into.

Style Icons: Female of the week

Lily Tomlin

Lily Tomlin Dignified and unique, Tomlin is one of the coolest lesbians out there. Just sit back an marvel at her presence in Short Cuts, Nashville, and 9 to 5.

Desserts of the week

Almondine

Almondine The greatest benefit to Jim working in Dumbo is this bakery full of rich, sweet, delicious goodies. The cupcake pictured has a white chocolate mousse-like icing and is very cakey.

Spend a Couple Hours of the week

New York City Opera

New York City Opera If you are 35 and under, you only pay $30 per ticket, but get the best seats available. Jim and I usually sit ten rows back in the orchestra. A glimpse of the upcoming season is promising as well. NYC Opera is not as lavish as the Met, but tends to be more experimental and eclectic.

Places to Visit of the week

Lyndhurst

Lyndhurst A quick drive from the city in Tarrytown along the Hudson River, Lyndhurst is an exquisite Gothic Revival style mansion built by former New York City mayor William Paulding. Daily tours by Lydia are quite pleasant. Expansive grounds are nice for strolling. Lyndhurst also served as the location for Dark Shadows.

TV Shows of the week

America’s Next Top Model

ANTM The beast is back, and I have to say she's got a good group of girls with her. This season's going to be rip-roaring – I can just feel it.

Mr Jay
is more bulging than before (I hope his painted tit shirt still fits him) and crazy snatch Janice has made her appearance already, so hopefully we won't have to watch too much more of her.

We had Top Model's first racist, some playtime nudity wagering, bad drunkenness (I want to say up front that I hate Gina), pseudo divas (also hate Jade – she is right, she should have been discovered by now if it was meant to be, so guess what…) and some girls I actually kind of like (so far anyway).

Danielle is my favorite and not just because her occupation is “babysitter”, I also like the gap tooth, and the sass that's not too bitchy with a pinch of humor. Leslie is my second favorite because, simply enough, I think she is pretty. You think I'm too into ANTM? well, “Don't get it twisted!” is what I say to you.

Recipes of the week

Fish Stew

Fish Stew This is one of the best recipes I have tried in a long time. Making stews can be a tedious task, but this recipe is simple and relatively quick. I felt like I could open my own restaurant with this one.

Books of the week

My Summer of Love

My Summer of Love Friendships between girls can be intense curious things. Helen Cross is brilliant at describing the complexities of an obsessive friendship, the kind where the outside world falls away. '

My Summer
was made into a movie in 2004, with absolutely beautiful cinematography and many plot changes that I actually preferred. Director Pawlikowski misses the details of the friendship however, boiling it down to two girls trying on clothes and dancing sexily. Also missing is an interesting subplot involving a missing girl. See the movie after you've read the great novel about two nearly dangerous girls in Yorkshire in the 1980s.

Albums of the week

Dirty Mind

Prince - Dirty Mind WOW- Prince really packs a punch into a half hour on this still shocking (see “Sister” lyrics ) album. So many genres in so little time, this was the beginning of the Prince we all knew and loved. Raunchy, exciting, danceable, soulful, just a really fun album. Sure, there aren't a lot of big hits, but aren't they over played anyway? And I can't get over how much I love the cover. Yes to old Prince! Yes to dirty minds!

Style Icons: Male of the week

Tom Baker

Tom Baker When remember watching Dr. Who as a child, Tom Baker is Who I see. That shock of curly hair, those overcoats, the layering, and that awesome, awesome knitted scarf, the look is perfection. A new series starring Christopher Eccleston aired on BBC last year and I am tracking them down to watch.

Restaurants of the week

Ruby’s

Ruby's After confronting a line of about thirty people waiting for a brunch seat at Clinton Street Bakery Co, we wondered to this tiny Australian Soho cafe because I had read a good recommendation. What a pleasant surprise. They have really good coffee, a pleasant staff, and let me just tell you about the Whaley burger. Fresh ground beef, pineapple, beets, ketchup and a fried egg. I find myself craving it often and will most likely make Ruby's a regular stop for me to taste it again and again. And if you care about your heart and cholesterol, there are plenty of healthier menu options.

Drinks of the week

Coffee

Coffee Vendor I started working in midtown a few years ago, and once I realized 2.50 is not a good deal on a cup of coffee, decided to start getting coffee from my local vendor, a very nice Eastern European man. I felt like a real New Yorker the day I no longer had to place my order because I was a “regular”. Every morning we chat about the weather, the weekend, his dogs, etc. and I couldn't think of a more pleasant start to a work day. It certainly beats the service I recently got at Starbucks down the street :
Me: “One tall vanilla latte”, register girl “One tall vanilla latte”, coffee maker “One tall vanilla latte BUUURRPP!!”.

Spend a Couple Minutes of the week

Wear Green

Wear Green in St. Patty's I like any tradition that involves dressing up in some way. Apparently this is not an Irish tradition, as green is actually considered unlucky. But best to go ahead so as to not get pinched. And green is a much more flattering color than people give it credit for.

Web Sites of the week

Flickr

Flickr This site is a really good idea that I hope people use more often. I often find pictures of restaurants I want to check out and places I am interested in visiting that are nowhere else on the internet. You can post your own photos or look up photos by word or tag- like space ship, for example (see picture).
