When bad things happen, you want to wrap yourself in feel good and heart warming. There could not be a greater embodiment of these than Houseboat, a proper romance with Cary Grant at his most charming and Sophia Loren looking as stunning as any woman ever has in her gold lame. Never going too soft and gushy, this is a love story and tear jerker for those that usually don't gravitate towards either.
Also has one of the most unforgettable and loving scenes where Grant and his son discuss death. An under appreciated gem.

Hunks of the week
Richard Burton
One of my top five actors of all time, extraordinary in some of the best movies ever made, including Night of the Iguana and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? He made boozy Welshman seem so alluring, a lost breed these days.

Diana Vreeland
I could hardly read D.V. and not think of Diana Vreeland as my style icon. She practically defines style icon. Just look at that room. One of my favorite principles of her is this: “too much good taste can be boring.” Amen to that.

This American Life
Oh, if only I had more quiet hours in the day, I would spend them with this, the most thought provoking, multifaceted, and engrossing radio program ever.
Most all of the shows can be downloaded for free at their website. The last story in the Babysitting episode, anything by Jonathan Goldstein, readings by one of my favorite authors – George Saunders, and hilarious entries by David Sedaris are among my favorites, but there are so many I have yet to hear, I am still exploring.

Places to Visit of the week
Silky Oaks Lodge and Daintree Rainforest,
I visited The Silky Oaks Lodge with my family when I was in eighth grade and have never been somewhere quite as magical since. Kangaroos come up to your windows, walks in the rainforest are filled with exotic birds and huge snakes, and the accommodations are sumptuous in their austerity.

The Match Game
I was talking with Jim's aunts about all the wild times their parents had as partying adults in the sixties and seventies. Our generation has nothing on them. It is hard to picture what it must have been like, except fortunately, reruns of The Match Game have given me some insight.
Truly one of the most entertaining shows to watch, not for the actual “game” part, but the antics of totally hammered Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly and Gene Rayburn.

Also must recommend the Canterbury Naturals Brand Crepe Mix for those that don't like to make from scratch all the time.

Books of the week
D.V.
This vibrant, buoyant, and bold autobiography helped get me through the toughest week of my life. Vreeland talks candidly as if you were sitting right next to her about her exotic, lavish, and exciting adventures in life. Nearly every line is quotable, and anyone with an interest in fashion must, must read it!
I found a kinship with Miss Vreeland as a woman who lives the life of an aesthetic. I only hope I experience half the wonders she had, but if not, as she suggests – I'll just “Fake it!”.

Albums of the week
The Modern Lovers
One of my most favorite albums from beginning to end. Punk and angsty but sweet and fragile, nothing else has been or will be quite like it.
The self deprecating and very funny “Pablo Picasso” (later recorded by The Burning Sensations for the Repo Man soundtrack) and and the heartfelt and pining “Girlfriend” are possibly my favorites, but, really the whole album is so good, it is difficult to choose.

Noel Coward
An interesting life as a Renaissance man. Playwright, novelist, songwriter, poet, performer, and gentleman. Quite a spectacular resume. Hear an interview here.

Restaurants of the week
Chai
Whenever I return home from being away, delivery from Chai is what I crave the most. Every dish on the menu is tasty, most especially the Spicy Beef Bamboo Shoots and the Pad See Ew.
If you can't get it delivered, the restaurant is comfy and inviting with exemplary service. Slightly off the beaten path in Williamsburg, not many people give Chai a chance next to the glitz of Sea (too oily for my taste) and juggernaut Planet Thai.

April Fools!
Very tough to pull off one convincingly without causing too much harm. I have managed a few in my time, and my poor father usually gets the worst of it.

BB&PPInc.
I bought a beautiful tree print by them at About Glamour and need to get it framed at our favorite framer. Cute and lovely artwork by one of the members of Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah, Robbie Guertin, and the talented Dasha Shishkin, BB&PPINC., is unfortunately going on a bit of a brake to pursue other endeavors, so if see something you like, get it while you can.

Laughs of the week
Snakes On A Plane
Samuel L. Jackson took one look at the title and said yes to this upcoming movie (anybody want to join me opening night?) which is about, well, snakes on a plane. The ludicrous title and plot have gained cult status and so much buzz, helped by Josh Friedman's blog entry, that they have gone back to reshoot to add more of everything including the line “I want these motherf**king snakes off the motherf**king plane!”.
