First and foremost, and don't let the fancy Criterion release fool you, Carnival of Souls is a B movie. It was made on the cheap with non professional actors and a twilight zone plot. That being said, it's the most effective, compelling, haunting, and distinctive B movie I have ever seen.
The cinematography and locations are eerie and beautiful and while the acting is not always first rate, it is memorable – especially the neighbor, who Roger Ebert called “a definitive study of a nerd in lust” in his review.
This movie is far better than it needed or deserved to be with its meager budget and the crew's lack of experience. For any fan of Twilight Zone or classic horror films of the 50's and 60's, this is a must see, all others should give it a chance and be pleasantly surprised.

Sugar Water
A great song that feels so nineties – when my world was a bit more carefree, with a brilliant Gondry video, trippy lyrics, and who can forget their guest star on the Buffy episode “When She Was Bad” where she acts like a total skank?

Alain Delon
It's a shock to me it took so long for M. Delon to make my picks. From Purple Noon to Spirits of the Dead, from L' Eclisse to (the awesome) Le Cercle Rouge, if you have seen any of his films you will agree he is one of the most gorgeous men to grace the earth. Plus he makes his own line of watches, cigarettes, sunglasses, and more.

Heidi Klum
Ok – so she is dressed by stylists and producers, but hasn't Heidi looked just adorable on Project Runway? Each week she looks better than the last. Doug and I both took notice of the red lipstick on one episode, because we are just that fashionable and dorky. And she is so sweet … or SO I THOUGHT. Not only is Heidi failing where she-beast Tyra shines – she is calling anorexics fat – well, Heidi you better not get any fatter – because you are on THIN ICE. Still, you look great!

Desserts of the week
Mille Crepe Cake
I have been pining and dreaming of Lady M's Mille Crepe Cake. However the price tag was getting between me and my dream. Lucky me, at a recent (also pricey) dinner at the delicious Peter Luger, they had a very similar – if not the exact same item on the dessert menu. It is as good as I had hope and one of my ambitions is realized. If you are good (and brave) in the kitchen here is a recipe.

Whitney Biennial
The Biennial opens Thursday the 2nd, so while I can't give a review of the show I am recommending it anyway. Let New York Magazine debate it's validity – I still think it is one of the most exciting museum shows and I always look forward to it. I am particularly interested in seeing the work of Matthew Day Jackson – whose show at the Perry Rubenstein Gallery I tried and failed to make it to on three separate occasions.

New Orleans
So it is a bit late this year to head down – but you can still make the end of Mardi Gras (Feb. 28). Or you can go for the Tennessee Williams Festival (Mar 30 – Apr 2). I have mixed emotions about New Orleans , there are parts I loved; the architecture, the cemeteries, some of the music, the history, and the beignets – and there are parts I didn't so much love about my visit there last year; the frat boys, the vomit smell, some of the music, and the poverty.
It didn't help that we stayed in a bad hotel in a bad part of town. I would like to go back sometime. There is truly nowhere else quite like it – and besides the city needs you.

Prime Suspect
So Law & Order reruns and CSI are amusing enough and go down easy, and I'll watch most anything on BBC Mystery Monday, but if you want a real crime drama, a sophisticated one with top acting, an excellent script, realistic characters, genuine tension and excitement, you must rent Prime Suspect. The first one is the absolute best serial killer mystery ever. And you can quote me on that.

Bad Haircut
It seems that many memoir/ fiction books about growing up in the seventies have come out in the past ten years. I know I have read a few – but Bad Haircut is the only one I remember enjoying and being moved by so much. Especially affecting is the story “Snowman”.
You may know Perrotta as the author of Election – on which a the surprisingly excellent movie was based on. You will know about him again soon when Kate Winslet and Jennifer Connelly star in the movie based on his latest novel Little Children (also a very good read). This one is my favorite though. I hope more people discover it.

New Skin For The Old Ceremony
As the coolest man alive, nearly any Leonard Cohen album could be recommended, but I have been listening to a lot of New Skin this week. The offbeat energy of “Is This What You Wanted“, the sparse simplicity of “I Tried to Leave You“, the childlike creepiness of “Who By Fire“, and possibly one of his best songs ever, “Chelsea Hotel #2” which showcases his amazing talent as a poet and writer and it may or may not be about Janis Joplin. Rolling Stone claimed this as “not one of his best” in their review in 1975.
I disagree, not the first or last time with the publication.

Jim Morrison
Beards, beards, beards!! Everyone is crazy for beards. Even weirdly dated jewelry companies. So maybe New York Magazine had to be all bitchy about it, but I don't care what they say I am glad facial hair is back. Our boys are becoming men. I honor one of my favorite beards this week- the one of Mr. Morrison. His is a full luxurious mane of whiskers that reminds me of someone I love very much (see photos).

Lederhosen
A recipe for fun: book a big table, invite all your friends, enjoy really good bratwurst, potato pancakes, schnitzel, and potato salad, have many pitchers of Heiffeweiss, stumble home, and love your life. Lederhosen has become a staple for my friends and I (thank you Astrid for introducing us). A very friendly staff, a relaxed atmosphere, great food, and always a guaranteed wonderful time

Radler
Half beer half lemonade. A nice refreshing break from pitchers of Heiffeweiss. Like a dessert beer. Many brands make bottled versions but I haven't had them yet – see here, here, and here. Radlers also have a half way interesting origin.

Playing M.A.S.H.
A dirty version of this game got me in deep, deep trouble in sixth grade (my bad girl year). It was a little unfair as the boys in my class had written most of the inflammatory material. I mean, I didn't even know what “pops a nut” meant.
Now the game has evolved to be online – which seems kind of sad to me. It is meant to be played with friends in a circle with giggles and gossip. So I recommend M.A.S.H., but only in the good old fashion way. And play dirty if you want, no one's mom is going to be called in this time.

Gigposters
A fun community website to search through for hours. Keith Herzik, Serigraphie Populaire, Tyler Stout, Mat Brinkman, and Leia Bell are some of my favorite designers and I am sure there are more to discover each day. I am in there too (under Poster Children) – not all my best work I must say, but I did manage a poster of the week once. If anyone is looking for someone to do posters for their show – give me a ring – I'd love to start again.

The Ricky Gervais Show
Available for free (but not free for much longer) this is a hilarious radio show where Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant talk with their unusual village idiot friend Karl Pilkington and tease and prod him. Karl's diaries are absolutely phenomenal. It is a bit hard to describe why the show is funny, like a lot of humorous things, you really just have to experience it for yourself.
But for a taste here is a Karl quote: “You'll never see an old person eating a Twix, but they always buy ornaments”. The new shows should be up Feb. 28th on podcast (this is the most highly listened to show on podcast ever – as they will boast all the time), even with a small fee I can't recommend taking a listen enough. It's brilliant.
