Picks for the week of December 26th, 2005

Movies of the week

Radio Days

Directed by Woody Allen (1987) The best movie to watch during the new year. This is a funny, nostalgic memoir of the New York of Woody Allen's childhood. A world without adopted daughters and possible comebacks (is Match Point really going to be good?), but Mia's still there – and Dianne Wiest. The music is amazing – my song of the week comes from this soundtrack.

If you haven't seen this movie you should.

Hunks of the week

Donald Sutherland

Donald Sutherland Awesome in MASH, Alex in Wonderland, Klute, Don't Look Now, and the list goes on… They just don't let actors look this interesting anymore. And this might be off the subject but why do all actors shave their chests now?

Style Icons: Female of the week

Chantal Goya

Chantal Goya Hey, maybe I can mention that I just cut my hair a few more times. In fact, Chantal Goya (from Godard's Masculine Feminine) was my haircut inspiration. She went on to become a French gay icon and a singer of musique pour enfants. Check out her crazy website.

Seriously, check it out, it's pretty insane.

Desserts of the week

Cape Gooseberries

Cape Gooseberries I want to thank Martha and her chef roommate for introducing me to these beautiful orange sweet tasting little fruits. They have a tangy pineapple/strawberry taste with the size and texture of a small cherry tomato. I can't imagine these are very easy to find but if you happen upon some don't miss the opportunity to try them.

Spend a Couple Hours of the week

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage I received this unbelievable massage as a gift last year and it cured me of some shoulder problems I was having. One of the most worth-while indulgences ever.

Places to Visit of the week

Graceland

Graceland Elvis Presley As it gets cold, go south. Graceland is a great road trip destination, even if other parts of Memphis can be less appealing. Word of advice: if you're a young woman, don't go to the race track late at night, it's not as fun as you might think.

Elvis did have an awesome pad however, with some pretty fantastic and unusual decorating choices.

TV Shows of the week

I, Claudius

I, Claudius Widely considered one of the best miniseries ever made. The cast is amazing, including John Hurt as Caligula (that alone should entice you to watch). Jim and I watched all thirteen episodes in one weekend. Shot without locations on sound stages, all on video no less, it still puts HBO's extremely expensive Rome to shame. This page has a ton of clips.

Books of the week

The Little Friend

The Little Friend by Donna Tartt It took ten years for Donna Tartt to release her second book. It was well worth the wait. The Little Friend opens with the murder of a young boy, he is hung from a tree on Mother's Day. The rest of the novel takes place eleven years later, when Harriet, the little boy's baby sister, decides she is going to solve the murder. Like a Harriet the Spy in Mississippi in the 1970s, only with a very dark and realistic coming of age story. Like her other book, The Secret History, you will be lost in her world, reading late into the night.

Albums of the week

If You’re Feeling Sinister

If You're Feeling Sinister by Belle and Sebastian This was the first Belle and Sebastian album I bought. I really hadn't listened to it from beginning to end for years until a few weeks ago on a long drive. They could have called it “If You're Feeling Sentimental” because this took me right back to my 21st birthday in Providence, which actually kind of sucked–which is probably why I was listening to a lot of Belle and Sebastian at the time.

Style Icons: Male of the week

The Lost Boys

The Lost Boys I knew my Halloween costume was set for years after this movie came out. Maybe if that were true for the dudes I used to know, I would have “lost” my virginity a long time before I did.

Restaurants of the week

Pravda

Pravda 281 Lafayette Street between Houston and Prince Streetsunderground bar/restuarant is run by the same people as Balthazar and Pastis. We had several small dishes to share. I recommend the Crispy Horseradish Oysters and the suprising Blini with Smoked Sturgeon. I also recommend coming early–it gets crowded with people you don't want to hang out with around nine thirty.

Drinks of the week

Infused Vodka

Infused Vodka There are three places in the city I have been to that do it well: Anyway Cafe (151 2nd Ave.); The Russian Vodka Room (265 W. 52nd St.); Aquavit (65 E. 55th St.) and I've also heard that Savalas (285 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn) serves an Oreo infused vodka, I can't recommend it until I've tried it, but I'll keep you posted.

Laughs of the week

Trapped in the Closet Videos

Trapped in the Closet Videos by R Kelly Unfortunately these are no longer available on the R. Kelly website. There is too much money to be made in DVD sales. I probably don't have to tell you how amazing this is, as it has become somewhat of a weird pop culture phenomenon. But if you have missed it, do yourself a favor and take a look.
